‘World Environment Day 2022’ observed across Nagaland

Various organisations and government departments on Saturday organised pre-celebration programmes on “World Environment Day” on the theme “only one earth”, by carrying out plantation drives. The drives were mainly aimed at creating awareness among the masses in Nagaland, to take part in preserving and restoring the environment.
It may be mentioned that the day is celebrated on June 5 every year and is marked to call for action by governments, private organisations, civil society and individuals to protect the environment.
“Biggest challenge to environmental movement is the self”
PHED Dimapur division in collaboration with Act of Kindness, society Dimapur organised a programme to mark the day at state stadium, here on Saturday.
Speaking at the programme, social activist and member, governing board of North East Network/ consultant, wildlife conservation society, Bano Haralu said the biggest challenge in environmental movement was the self and the attitude of people since they were the caretakers of the planet.
At the programme, keynote address was delivered by PHED, Dimapur DWSM, district coordinator Imojungla who highlighted various issues that were affecting the environment.
We must all lay importance on conservation and protection of environment and bring it to forefront of community syncing in any possible way at any given opportunity, she stated.
At the programme, 200 trees saplings were distributed to stakeholders and various institutions.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by AKS, associate member Mercy Loreni Murry, invocation was offered by Nükmen Baptist Arogo pastor, Darogapathar Dimapur, Kilang Longkumer and vote of thanks was proposed by Act of Kindness society, founder and president Lenti Aier.
AYO stresses on practicing environmental-friendly habits
Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) observed World Environment Day by planting tree saplings at its office premises on the theme “Plant for Life”, here on Saturday.
Speaking at the programme, AYO president Kekhrie Pfukha said a total of 104 Angami villages were participating in the tree plantation drive with over 10,000 trees were expected to be planted.
He said that in order to ensure full maturity of whatever tree saplings were planted, AYO decided to keep the number low so that the saplings would get proper attention.
Pfukha stressed on the need to start getting serious with changes that people experienced environmentally.
He observed that people should reconsider and reevaluate on the roles they were playing in bringing environmentally friendly changes.
Expressing his happiness over the display of unanimity, Phukha said it showed that people were united towards a goal which was to protect the rich biodiversity of the land.
The programme was chaired by AYO general secretary Pelevito Nakhro while invocation was offered by finance secretary Rocus Rino and vice president, Neisizo Kuotsu proposed vote of thanks.
NSF kicks off 75 years celebration & tree plantation drive
Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) kicked off a mass tree plantation drive across all Naga inhabited areas as part of NSF’s 75th year celebration, coinciding with World Environment Day at Naga solidarity park.
Recalling his past days in the federation, minister for Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue & Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu reminded the gathering that it was time to unite together and strengthen the Naga Hoho as the Federation could not carry the burden of the people alone.
Kronu reminded the people that every country had their own share of problems which he had observed during his journey abroad.
Pointing out that problems will always exist, he appealed to the people to come together with a common effort.
In his speech, NSF president Kegwayhun said Nagas were in a time where the society was fragmented. In this regard, he appealed to all the Naga societies to ease their defenses and come together to solve common issues.
Referring to the theme under 75 years celebration, convenor, planning committee, K Temjen Jamir stressed that it was need of the hour for Naga people at this juncture to come together and have a common approach towards Naga political settlement.
He described it as a time to revive the feeling of oneness which he said was the strength of Naga blood that held everyone together.
On behalf of NSF, Temjen also urged upon all concerned groups engaged in peacemaking to resume their noble journey of reconciliation and called upon every Naga to reconcile themselves first before they reconcile with others.
The programme was chaired by vice president Atokiho Sumi, opening prayer by deputy speaker Chumben Khuvung, special prayer for NSF by Kohima Baptist Pastor’s fellowship and lighting of jubilee torch, by Neiba Kronu while concluding remark was delivered by general secretary, Siipuni Ng Philo.
Four kinds of trees were planted during the plantation drive, while 75 saplings were funded by the SBI, and 1000 saplings were provided by the Forest department at each unit.
‘Salangtem ward geospatial map’ launched in Mkg
Commemorating World Environment Day, Salangtem ward authority under Mokokchung town, launched the “Salangtem ward geospatial map”, (first of its kind in Nagaland) at Salangtem community hall, here on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Salangtem ward authority chairman, Lanuakum stated that the ward has been observing World Environment Day for the many years with dedication.
He informed that the ward has been planting trees, turning wastes dump into flower gardens among various other activities.
This year, he said, they were initiating planting of oranges with assistance from the district Horticulture office on adoption basis in ward households.
The ward chairman also informed that they would promote kitchen waste compost through the efforts of Ward Sanitation Committee. Further, Lanuakum informed that one week’s waste plastic, which amounted to more than 300 kgs was collected and forwarded to the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) for recycling.
Earlier, special prayer was offered by MTBA associate pastor, Monglir.
Southern Angami undertakes tree plantation drive
The 14 Southern Angami 1 A/C organised a tree plantation drive at Kisama in commemoration of World Environment Day.
At the programme, advisor for Elections and Technical Education, Medo Yhokha urged upon the gathering to contribute in small ways to preserve and protect the environment.
Plantation will not only add aesthetic beauty but also contribute to mitigate environmental issues, the advisor stated.
NDPP Youth Organisation president, Kelhouneizo Yhome in his speech spoke on the significance of the plantation drive and stressed on climate change which has been affecting the earth.
He encouraged the people to play proactive roles in taking care of their surroundings.
Yhome also clarified that the ticket for 14 Southern Angami 1 A/C would be “given to Medo Yhokha only”.
At the programme, 500 saplings were planted including wild apple, oak tree, cherry and ornamental trees around the stretch of Kisama.
The programme was chaired by Tholezo Paphino and invocation was offered by Khrielhoulie Chuse.
Phek plants 2 lakh tree saplings across the district
Around 2 lakh tree saplings were planted on Saturday throughout Phek district during a “mega tree plantation drive” on the theme “one person, one tree.”
The programme was organised by District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) Phek in collaboration with National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd to commemorate World Environment Day and as part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
At the closing function, minister for Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu acknowledged DPDB Phek for initiating the drive and expressed gratitude to all concerned officers, NGOs and villagers for active participation.
Pointing out that Phek district was known for agricultural activities, the minister stated “our economy will not improve without agriculture.”
Kronu also stressed on the need to encourage villagers to undertake large scale plantation of fruit trees in the district.
the plantation drive was flagged off by Phek DPDB chairman Kezhienyi Khalo and NPF legislature party leader and UDA co-chairman Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu.
