Basic firefighting training underway in Nagaland

Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) organised a two-day basic firefighting training and fire safety audit inspection for various stakeholders across the state, which got underway on Monday. The objective of the training is to spread mass awareness on fire safety, code of practice, Dos and Don’ts, etc.
Kohima: The training on fire safety and prevention was held at the State Academy Hall, Kohima where inspector NFES, Sedevizo Hibo informed that the Nagaland F&ES has been appointed as nodal department to conduct inspections and fire safety audit of hospitals and nursing homes (both government and private sectors) as per National Building Code.
According to a DIPR report, Hibo said the main objective of conducting training and seminar was to create awareness among the masses and to disseminate advisories to prevent fire incidents in hospitals, nursing homes and other public and private places.
He further informed that failure to implement such measures on the part of officers, owners and proprietors of any high-rise buildings would be liable to prosecution “under relevant sections of law.”
During the practical session, fire safety measures on prevention and protection from fire hazards was demonstrated by ASI NFES, D. Angami Keyho and rescue techniques on incidents and disasters was demonstrated by FM NFES, Kenilo Khing.
Representatives from various agencies and stakeholders attended the training. The second training session will be conducted on June 21 with participants from shopping complexes, markets, hotels, churches and any high-rise building (15 meters), wards, colonies and villages under Kohima district, DIPR informed.
Mokokchung: In Mokokchung district, the training was conducted at Town Hall Mokokchung where for representatives from all state and central government departments including government hospitals and banks, representatives from schools, colleges, universities, institutions, private hospitals and nursing homes.
According to a DIPR report, on June 21, the training will be held from 9 am to 12 noon for members representing shopping malls, markets, hotels, churches and any high rising buildings of private including residentials, etc., followed by representatives from wards/colony, villages and other stakeholders left out from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Zunheboto: The basic firefighting training in Zunheboto is being held at Town Hall, Zunheboto. According to a DIPR report, while delivering opening remarks on behalf of the district administration, SDO (C) Zunheboto, Athrong said there were two types of disasters—natural and man-made.
Athrong said disasters were unavoidable, however, he stressed on the need to be aware of basic safety measures and to be prepared for eventualities.
The training programme is cataloged into two sessions a day.
Wokha: The training on basic firefighting & fire safety audit & inspection was held at Tiyi Hall, Wokha. According to a DIPR report, deputy commissioner (DC) Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan urged upon the trainees to impart the skills to their departments and other sectors about fire safety. He suggested that awareness programmes should be imparted at school level to inculcate in the minds of the children to take up preventive measures during any disaster.
Meanwhile, officer in- charge, Fire Station Wokha, Keleseho Stephen Tsukru sought the cooperation of public by providing precise information during emergencies so that they may be able to save lives and properties. During the technical session, resource persons from F&ES, ASI, Haying, ASI Yibenthung and SI Menose dwelt on various topics including fire prevention & protection systems as per NBC 2016, Fire Dos & Don’ts, etc. Demonstration on use of fire extinguishers was also conducted.
Phek: In Phek district, the training was held at Bible Hill Colony, Phek where INSP Sheiya Konyak spoke on the importance of fire safety and how to handle the situation in times of fire outbreaks.
According to a DIPR report, the trainers spoke on basic firefighting, fire safety inspection & audit, handling of extinguishers, fire prevention & protection system and forest fires.
A demonstration on how to use fire extinguishers was also conducted.
Peren: During the training programme at Jalukie ‘B’ Village Council Hall, under Peren district, resource person ASI Peren F&ES, Kedigumlung Thou spoke on basic firefighting, fire safety inspection & audit, handling of extinguishers, fire prevention & protection system and forest fires.
Later, a demonstration on use of different types of fire extinguishers was displayed by the personnel from F&ES Peren.
