Tensions along Assam-Nagaland border once again flared up after the miscreants allegedly from Assam side entered Nagaland and destroyed plantations belonging to villagers of Yajang C under Mokokchung district on June 19 last.
Confirming the incident, Addl. SP and PRO Mokokchung police told this correspondent that there were incursions into Nagaland from Assam side and some destruction on plantations happened. PRO, however, could not confirm whether it was the Assam police or forest personnel as their uniforms were similar.
He said that situation was under control and no untoward incidents reported on Monday. PRO also stated that since 13 IR has its battalion headquarters at Yajang, the personnel were patrolling the area. Meanwhile, when contacted over phone, Yajang C village council chairman Imtionen, narrated an incident in detail. He alleged that at around 10.30 am on Sunday, Assam police along with villagers from Ramkham in Assam intruded into the village and destroyed plantations and nurseries besides spraying herbicides on paddy fields.
The council chairman also alleged that this was the third such incidents this year occurred within a span of three months (April, May and June). Asked about the situation, the chairman said that nothing happened on Monday. He further said that volunteers from the village had gone to the site Monday and stood guard, but no incident occurred.
