Anglo-Phom dictionary launched in Kohima

Anglo-Phom dictionary, a publication of the department of Art & Culture was released by additional secretary, Home department and member of Phom Literature Board, M. Shayung Phom, in the conference hall of the directorate of Art & Culture, Kohima on Thursday.
According to a DIPR report, M. Shayung Phom said the dictionary will encourage the younger generation to understand and preserve Phom language which he said, was “diminishing presently.”
He said publishing such a book would promote Naga culture and heritage and guide new learners.
In her introductory remark, Art & Culture secretary, Athel O. Lotha said the Anglo-Phom dictionary was an outcome of the ministry of Tribal Affairs programme “support to tribal research institutes”, which was implemented by the department of Art & Culture. She informed that the aim of the project was to document current status of the language.
Athel said the dictionary emerged as cumulative works of various scholars, language experts, Phom Literature Board and the department.
In the vote of thanks, Art & Culture director, Adela Moa said that it was an honour for the department to release the dictionary which she said, was a landmark not only for the department but also for the Phom community.
She thanked editors—Yanbeni Yantan and Dr. Imlienla Imchen who studied and systematically edited the dictionary and their two research assistants, Vikhosanü Kuotsu, Toshimenla Ao and field assistant, Mola L. Ong.
Short speeches were given by Bongshen member, Phom Literature Board and Dr. Mangnyau, Phom Union and Mola L. Ong Field Assistant.
The programme was chaired by Art & Culture, deputy director Lampha Konyak.
