Commemorating the 71st Independence Day, Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) organized one-day workshop on women participation and leadership in local governance at Holy Cross Campus, Dimapur. The programme was organized to capacitate the women on the need for proactive participation in local governance by making informed collective action for the common good of the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Rev. Fr. Joe Mariadhas said women who were empowered and able to realize their full potential, are incredible force in taking the whole nation forward by contributing to their own well-being.
He said that women needed to make conscious effort to establish themselves in the social life as much as they would in their family life.
He further said key drawback of the underdeveloped communities across the world was the underutilization of the innate strength of their women for the common good.
Professor, NEISSR, Dr. Toli H. Kiba in her session on the participation and leadership of women in Naga polity, dwelt on the traditional modern governance systems among the Nagas and how the women have been denied their due position consistently.
Focusing on the need for improving women participation in governance, she opined that traditional barriers have long kept the women under restraints and the result of the same can be found in terms of the skewed developmental indicators of Nagaland.
