National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Wokha on Tuesday organised an an awareness programme at Government Mt. Tiyi College (MTC).
A press note by DEO (NTCP) Wokha, Ruutsome Savino stated that resource person, Dr. Mhonthung Tungoe, dental surgeon CHC Sanis, stressed on the three most poisonous chemical in tobacco, namely nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide.
He spoke on tobacco facts where every 6 seconds someone dies from tobacco use and kills almost 6 million every year globally. Dr. Mhonthung expressed his concern wherein Nagaland stood 2nd in consumption of tobacco as per GATs survey 2009 – 2010. He also sensitized the participants on COTPA Act 2003.
Psychologist, Abeni R. Kikon spoke on how a person could be influenced or stayed away from the use of tobacco in any form. She advised the students to stay away from tobacco use as they were still young.
Earlier, welcome address was given by MTC principal, Dr. Apeni Lotha, wherein she also gave a brief overview of the college stand on the control of tobacco in the campus and the untidy appearance if one developed the habit of using tobacco in any form. Vote of thanks was delivered by Sentimenla Jamir HoD Education. 300 participants attended the awareness programme.
