Red Ribbon Club of the State College of Teacher Education (SCTE) Kohima observed “World AIDS Day” on November 28 under the theme, “Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV.”
A press release by the college informed that in her address, district program officer, district AIDS prevention and control unit, Kohima, Sentimongla spoke on HIV and AIDS and the first detection of the virus in the world and India. She spoke on how HIV was transmitted from one person to another, the Dos and Don’ts, and the stigmas involved with the illness.
Sentimongla also promoted the “ABC” approach in which A stands for “abstinence,” B for “be faithful,” and C for “condom use.”
The second session was a discussion on the topic, “True Love Waits”, wherein Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo Pastor, Rev. Tiatoshi briefed the gathering on the “True Love Waits Movement” started by Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and strongly emphasised on abstinence. He encouraged the gathering to abstain from pre-marital sex and to “save sex” rather than “safe sex.”
Rev. Tiatoshi based his speech on the biblical aspect and said “God created sex and it is good, provided it is done within the bounds of marriage,” and animated the gathering to be faithful to their partners.
HIV testing and counselling service was also initiated during the programme by DAPCU-MICTC. 19 teacher-trainees volunteered for the testing and they were given HIV prevention information and counselling to reduce risk and remain HIV-negative. Badges and pamphlets on the transmission, prevention and risks of HIV & AIDS and STIs were also distributed.
