Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce By-election in Nagaland which may be held after the July 17 presidential polls. NPF party sources informed Nagaland Post that the notification for the by election had been delayed for Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh and Goa since they could not be held before the presidential election.
The by election in Nagaland will be held for the 10-Northern Angami-I constituency which was vacated by sitting MLA Khriehu Liezietsü in order to enable chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü to become a member of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly within six months after being sworn-in.
Chief Minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu who is also president of the ruling party NPF, was sworn-in as chief minister on February 22 after previous incumbent T.R. Zeliang had to step down under intense public demand following the turmoil and violence after elections to the ULBs were called.
Khriehu Liezietsu who was elected 10 Northern Angami -1 Assembly Constituency resigned on May 24 from the membership of the Twelfth, Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
The seat was first won by Dr. Shürhozelie in 1969 on UDF ticket which he went on to win successive elections in 1974,1977,1982,1987,1993,did not contest in 1998, contested and won in 2003 and 2008.
