In tune with the theme ‘No voters to be left behind’, the Election Commission of India (ECI) would launch a nationwide comprehensive programme called ‘Special Drive’ with effect from July 1- 31, 2017. The month of June 2017 would be used for preparatory works. In a press release, chief electoral officer (O) Nagaland, N.Moa Aier, stated that activities of Special Drive would include enrolment of eligible young Indian Citizens particularly in 18-19 age group and removal of names of dead electors, multiple names, transferred out names and underage, which were still continuing in the electoral rolls.
Data on registered deaths would be collected from the Registrar of Deaths and all registered death entries would be removed during the special drive. Publicity and related issues such as campaign to motivate the electors to get their names registered and participate in the electoral process for stronger democracy would be organized during this period, Aier stated. Further, CEO said that special campaign dates would be held on July 8 and July 22, 2017.
