NSCN (I-M) destroys seized contraband items

NSCN (I-M) on Sunday destroyed seized contrabands worth Rs 10 lakh approximately at Kushiabill Ground here in presence of representatives of colony councils and women hoho, church leaders and colony residents.
NSCN (I-M) UT-1 secretary Obedo Tuccu said the consignments destroyed were seized on different occasions and included sunflower drug, ganja, SP tablets and other intoxicating tablets.
In a short programme before burning the seized items, CAO UT-1 G Kakheto Zhimo spoke on students getting addicted to drugs, especially sunflower.
He disclosed that parents would often request them to hold their children in “correction cell” in order to correct them and claimed that the UT helped around 20 persons to date.
Zhimo also refuted the claim of Assam Rifles of having conducting a raid and rescuing individuals from NSCN (I-M)’s clutches and who were allegedly abducted for ransom.
Meanwhile, delivering a short speech on the occasion, East Dimapur GB Association president Niuto Awomi requested Indian Army, State government, organisations, NGOs, etc, to carry out mass movement against drug menace and seize and destroy drugs.
He stressed that while carrying out such works, the government should not cause obstruction and instead lend support.
Lauding the works of the India Army in carrying out seizures, he however said that besides publicising such seizures, it should also invite GBs, public or village elders to such raids.
On prohibition in the State, Niuto alleged that the State government did not take any action when alcohol was being sold in every nook and corner. He urged the government to legalise alcohol in the State, opining that there would be less substance users if this was done.
Questioning the role of church for supporting the ban on alcohol, he said this had instead encouraged the sellers to make more profit.
He requested the Army, State government, the church, councils, NGOs, overground and underground groups, etc, to check the menace of drug peddlers to safeguard Naga society.
Other speakers thanked the NSCN (I-M) for seizing the contraband and burning these in front of village councils and leaders.
Sharing her thoughts on the ban of alcohol, a women leader said youth were getting involved in drugs due to ban on alcohol and hence urged the State government to legalise its sale in the State.
She lauded the NSCN (I-M) for burning the seized contrabands in broad daylight and in front of village and church leaders, terming it as a first of its kind.
Short speeches were also delivered by chairman Lotha community Darogajan village Roland Odyuo and president Ao community Kushiabill village R. Meren Lemtur.
