Workshop on NAS 2021 & FLS 2022

A one-day workshop for post National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 and Foundational Learning Study 2022 (FLS) was conducted by conducted by Nagaland Education Mission Society (NEMS), Samagra Shiksha Nagaland at Capital Convention Hall on May 11.
Speaking at the workshop, commissioner and secretary, School Education, SCERT and vice chairman NEMS, Kevileno, informed the NAS was an assessment to the health of the education system in the country, and in Nagaland, the assessment has been carried out in 910 schools, involving 507 teachers and 28,995 students.
Kevileno also emphasized on the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) which focused on the improving foundational years of schooling where by the time a child reaches grade 3, they would be competent enough to read, solve simple maths and gain the grade level competencies. In that context, she informed that the FLS was carried out to assess the learning outcome of the grade 3, in 75 schools, involving 146 teachers and 669 children.
She emphasized that the teachers and administrators were the custodians of the children placed under their care and encouraged them to perform the role while guiding the future nation builders.
Director, SCERT, Keviraleu Kerhuo while delivering the welcome address said that as per NAS 2021, decline of students percentage of class 3 declined by 10% to 49% in class 5. It further declined to 41.9% in class 8 and 37.8% in class 10 and the Social-Group Wise Performance of ST/SC and OBC categories remained lower than that of students from the general category.
Kerhuo also informed that there was a decline in almost all subjects.
Therefore, as a crucial step towards strengthening efforts for Foundational Literacy ad Numeracy (FLN), a large-scale Foundational Learning Study (FLS) was undertaken by NCERT in March 2022, Kerhuo said.
She also highlighted that the NAS 2021 was conducted on November 12, 2021 by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as Assessment administrator for Grade 3, 5, 8 & 10 students of state Government schools, Government aided schools, private unaided recognised schools and central government schools, while at the State level, NAS 2021 was initiated by the Directorate of School Education (DoSE) with Timothy Thong, then Joint Director, DoSE as the Nodal Officer, and the selection of sampled schools were based on UDISE+2019-20 data.
