GPS Orchid Wokha wins ‘Nagaland Reading Festival’ award

Government Primary School (GPS) Orchid under Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC) Wokha was adjudged the winner of “Nagaland Reading Festival” while Government Middle School (GMS) Longdang, Tuensang district and GMS Piphema Bazar, Chumoukedima district were placed at second and third positions respectively.
According to a DIPR report, the award was handed over at a state level award function for “Nagaland Reading Festival (NRF)” organised by School Education Directorate and Samagra Shiksha Nagaland, in collaboration with Shiksha Lokam, Bangalore on May 12 at NBCC Convention Centre, Kohima.
In his speech, advisor, School Education & SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome said that the literary festival was to encourage reading among the Nagas. He encouraged the students on immense reading which would help strengthen cognitive skills and would make the process of learning much easier.
Yhome also acknowledged building leadership and the need to recognize and appreciate teachers. He further said that teachers should also take notes on working with disadvantaged groups in society which would help in facilitating positive growth for the development of children and the State as a whole.
On the occasion, the advisor also launched three new initiatives namely, “Literacy & Numeracy Fest” under National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) Nagaland, “Teachers Resource Package”, and NIPUN App.
Commissioner and Secretary, School Education, SCERT and vice chairman NEMS, Kevileno Angami mentioned that education was a powerful tool that can bring social justice and equality and only through education, human potential can be optimized.
Principal Director, School Education, Thavaseelan K said Nagaland was in the top five among the states for using micro-improvement approach in schools. He said that it was a team effort by the districts and the state for making the festival successful.
He mentioned that two organizations have been instrumental in helping the festival become a success: Mantra 4 Change and Shikha Lokam, and that Reading Festival was to bring opportunities for the children and to motivate them in their future.
