Nagaland joined the rest of the world in raising awareness and promoting hypertension prevention, detection and control by organising programmes on “World Hypertension Day” under 2023 theme, “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”, Wednesday.
It may be noted that the World Hypertension League (WHL) declared May 17 as “World Hypertension Day”, with an objective to spread awareness and educate people about hypertension or high blood pressure.
Wokha: An awareness programme cum screening camp was organised by Department of Health and Family Welfare, Wokha at Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC), Likya colony, Wokha to commemorate “World Hypertension Day”.
Addressing the participants, DPO (NCD) Wokha, Dr. Aseno Rhetso said hypertension has become prevalent among the local populace and urged the health workers to create more awareness about the disease in the community. Speaking on the occasion, medicine specialist, MO, District Hospital Wokha, Dr. Chumdemo Kikon, informed that high blood pressure can lead to kidney and heart diseases. He advised the beneficiaries to go for regular blood pressure check-up, to continue using medicines prescribed for BP by medical practitioner and decrease the intake of salt in their daily diet.
During the screening camp, blood pressure, blood sugar test, weight check, general check-up, distribution of free medicines etc., were some of the activities carried out by the health workers.
Mon: To raise awareness of the importance of measuring periodic blood pressure, and knowing its normal levels, Mon observed “World Hypertension Day” at Community Health Centre (CHC) Wakching.
Speaking at the programme, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Mon, Dr Vezokholu Theyo underscored the importance of the awareness rate on accurate blood pressure management methods, and requested the gathering to use the means of “word of mouth” for widespread information among the community. She explained many causes and risk factors that leads to high blood pressure and how to take preventive measures. In order to led a healthy lifestyle and to live longer, Dr. Theyo said one should regularly check their blood pressure.
The programme was chaired by MO Wakching CHC, Dr A Chingyen, prayer by deacon, Wakching Town Baptist Bumeinok, Konyong and vote of thanks by chairman HCMC, Wakching CHC, Yanang Konyak.
The programme was also attended by Dr Rongsennungla ZLO, Mon, Moie Bonnie Konyak, DPM, staffs of Wakching CHC and public.
Phek: Phek National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPCDCS) observed “World Hypertension Day” at Community Health Centre (CHC) Pfutsero.
Phek NPCDCS said the day was observed with an aim to educate people about the importance of screening, early diagnosis and early treatment of hypertension and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD).
In a keynote address, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Phek, Dr. Khriezotuo Paphino asked the gathering to be ambassadosr to advocate the importance of preventing hypertension by creating awareness in the society.
In his presentation, MO CHC Pfutsero, Dr.Vepfuhu highlighted the risk factors for hypertension and its preventive measures. He said hypertension was often called the “silent killer” because it usually has no symptoms but can lead to severe health complications if left untreated. He asserted the importance of lifestyle modification, dietary eating plan and measuring blood pressure regularly. DPO (NCD), Dr.Shasinle Tep informed the participants the availability of NCD clinic at District hospital Phek, CHC Meluri, Pfutsero and Chozuba and requested the participants to avail the facility in all the Health Units up to HWC-SC level. Mini health camp was also organised where screening for hypertension and diabetes were done.
The program was attended by various NGOs, education department and staff of CHC Pfutsero. Earlier, the invocation was said by Vechulou Kanuo, and the programme ended with vote of thanks by dental surgeon CHC Pfutsero, Dr.Ketoukhrie Mehta.
Tuensang: Health and Family Welfare Tuensang observed World Hypertension Day-cum-Mini health camp at Srinagesh PHC Tuensang Village on May 17.
The team carried out free Screening on Hypertension, blood pressure and Diabetes. During the camp, 25 female and 35 male were screened, out of which two diabetes type-2 and 21 hypertension were detected and given free medicines. Leaflets on NCD such as diabetes, mellitus, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and cancer in local dialect were also distributed. The medical team was led by MO Dr. Wallen Chang.
Medziphema: CHC Medziphema in collaboration with National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) Dimapur observed the day at CHC Medziphema.
At the programme, District Programme Officer for Non Communicable Diseases (NCD), Dr. Valentina Neikha highlighted on the key facts about hypertension, and gave a brief overview on the diagnosis, treatment and management of complications due to hypertension. She also elaborated on the theme and said that with an aim to control and prevent major NCDs, the day was earmarked to promote awareness on hypertension and to seek treatment.
The programme was chaired by Senior Medical Officer, CHC Medziphema, Dr. Temjensunep and invocation by Nourhe Neikha, Staff Nurse. After the programme, NCD screening was carried out.
