
One-day training on disaster management was organised by community development specialization students of North East Institute of Social Science & Research (NEISSR) on April 29, under the theme “together towards a safer community” in collaboration Civil Defence and Home Guards, Dimapur, led by platoon commander Thesuohie Angami.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Sashitemjen Imchen, entrepreneur, said that deforestation was one of the major causes of disaster.
He highlighted statistical facts that Nagaland was covered by 85% landslides and earthquake prone areas which have resulted and would still result in loss of life and property. Imchen encouraged the trainees to be an agent of change in spreading awareness to the society and communities.
Dr. C.P. Anto spoke on four steps of disaster management i.e. preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation.
He stressed on the need of developing and encouraging development and lifestyles as many of the impacts of disaster both natural and man-made had its root cause in blatant exploitation of the natural resources and Mother Earth through human activities like deforestation.
Dr. C.P. Anto called upon the social work trainees to take the responsibility in reaching out to the grass root level of the community to face any disaster while creating awareness on sustainable utilization of natural resources and being responsible for environment.
Thesuohie Angami, platoon commander, highlighted that Nagaland lay in the 5th seismic zone of earthquake prone area.
He mentioned about the measures to be taken before, during and after the disaster.
The trainees were trained on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO), Emergency Method of Rescue, Bandaging and Bleeding control along with practical demonstration.
