Kohima police have arrested one person accused of raping a minor girl at Tsiesema, Kohima on July 9, 2023.
According to Kohima police PRO, the accused has been identified as one Vilie alias Avilie Mere (20) of Tsiesema Basa village, under Chiephobozou police station.
The case was registered with the Women Police Station, Kohima. PRO said the arrested individual admitted to the commission of the crime. In this connection, PRO said the criminal investigation was still in progress.
ENPUK demands justice for victim
Lauding the investigation agencies for the arrest of the accused, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Union Kohima (ENPUK) urged the responsible authority to deliver justice at the earliest by awarding befitting punishment to the accused as per the relevant law.
ENPUK vice president Mukam Naga and general secretary Shahsha L. Menhahu expressed gratitude to the law enforcing agencies, investigation officers and all the civil organisations and authority of the concerned village for their cooperation and quick response in providing all the logistic support not only in arresting the accused but also providing security to the victim and her family.
The union said they had several rounds of meeting with district administration and security officers, child welfare society, law enforcing agencies. However, since there was no breakthrough in arresting the accused even after 20 days, ENPUK convened a join coordination meeting of all the seven tribal units on July 29, 2023 at DUDA Guest House Kohima and decided to serve an ultimatum to the Commissioner Nagaland through Mass Public Rally.
However, ENPUK stated that “swift and tireless action” of the “efficient investigation agencies” led to the arrest of the accused K. Vilie Mere, BA 1st Semester student of Kohima College, from Tsiesema basa new village on July 29, 2023 from his resident.
