The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has called for construction of 2-lane by-pass at NH-29 from Amar Flour Mill point near the inter-state check gate to Burma Camp, Dhansiri bridge here.
In a representation to chief minister Neiphiu Rio, NCD president Etsungmomo Kikon and general secretary LK Peter Anal stated that once the proposed by-pass was completed, it would facilitate access of all buses entering Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) located ahead of by-pass road.
With no option for road expansion in Dimapur coupled with the rapid increased of vehicles and population, they called for urgently taking up the proposed construction of by-pass for safety and well-being of the citizens. They noted that the state government had already acquired and demarcated land for construction of the by-pass.
They said the residents of Dimapur had high expectations and hoped that the proposed by-pass would become a reality to ease the unbearable traffic jam in the city.
They pointed out that NH-29 connecting Numaligarh in Assam to Dimapur, Kohima and Imphal passed through the busiest road along Dimapur District Sports Complex Stadium (DDSC) and railway overbridge (ROB), for which the traffic congestion along the entire stretch of the road till the 4-lane at Purna Bazar had become unbearable.
According to the representation, the administration and the police had taken up a lot of measures to regulate flow of traffic and minimise traffic congestion. To assess the traffic jam, the police had even conducted trial run of vehicles on April 14 and 15, 2023 at the proposed rehabilitation works of old ROB wherein all roads leading to the overbridge were blocked and vehicles diverted to various connecting roads, but it was noticed that the traffic jam was very severe and continued till 8-9 pm.
However, the NCD leaders acknowledged that the trial-run conducted by the police was a good initiative to create public awareness.
