Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) unveils new waste collection mechanism

Staff Reporter

Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has introduced a new waste collection system for Dimapur, which aimed at collecting waste multiple times in a day.

Informing this to media at the launch of “Let’s Keep Our City Clean” campaign by Team Better here Friday, DMC administrator W Manpai Phom explained that the new approach involved deployment of smaller waste collection vehicles which would operate throughout the day, departing from the conventional single morning collection.

He mentioned that the strategy was expected to significantly enhance waste management services, fostering a cleaner environment. Manpai also reiterated the council’s commitment to improving the waste management system in the town. He shared the DMC’s ongoing efforts, including surveys conducted in various wards and colonies, to identify areas for enhancement.

While acknowledging the existing challenges in waste collection and management, Manpai assured that DMC was dedicated to addressing the issue and expressed the hope to take substantial strides towards realisation of more effective waste collection and management soon. He disclosed that DMC had written to Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation and Dimapur GBs Union, urging them to play pivotal role in curbing rampant dumping of waste within their respective jurisdictions.

Addressing concerns on waste disposal site relocation, he said discussions had been initiated at the state government level and expressed the hope that the acquisition of suitable land for a new dumping site would be expedited.

Responding to queries on the absence of a concrete waste management plan for Dimapur, Manpai said that funding for waste management was beyond the scope of DMC. He however said that substantive progress had been made at the state government level, with potential solutions being explored.

He said several companies had expressed their intent to contribute to the initiative, adding that though a definitive memorandum of understanding (MoU) was yet to be finalised, preliminary reports had been submitted and efforts were underway to establish the framework for a “waste-to-energy” project.
