Observe cleanliness to prevent spread of dengue: CMO Dimapur

Staff Reporter

Even as the district administration has ordered conduct of social work once a week in view of the increasing number of dengue cases, chief medical officer (CMO) Dimapur, Dr. Limatula Aier, has underscored the importance of maintaining clean and dry surroundings to prevent dengue.

Dr. Aier told Nagaland Post that relying solely on fogging was not sufficient to eradicate the rampant spread of dengue in and around Dimapur. She said dengue was a viral infection caused by the dengue virus, primarily transmitted to humans through bites from infected female mosquitoes. CMO said those mosquitoes acquire the virus when they feed on the blood of an already infected person.

“It is imperative to understand that dengue is not directly transmitted from person to person. An intermediary step involving a mosquito vector is necessary to facilitate virus transmission between humans,” Dr. Aier said. CMO, therefore, urged all to maintain cleanliness and dryness in their surroundings to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
