G&M deptt begins geological, geotechnical investigation of landslides on NH-702 (D)

Correspondent

State Geology and Mining (G&M) department has begun carrying out geological and geotechnical investigation of two landslides/subsidence areas along NH-702(D) on Mokokchung-Mariani road.

The investigation was initiated on the request from executive engineer, PWD (NH) Division II, Mokokchung. The objective of the investigation team led by David Lhoupenyi (Geologist) would delineate suitable remedial measures for the two landslide/subsidence and subsequently table recommendations.

David explained that the team would first investigate geologically why landslides were happening and then prepare the report. The team would also attempt to find the ways on how to stop the landslide/subsidence in the affected area.

Further, the geologist stated that such types of landslides were very common in Nagaland. He said that preventive measures like retaining walls alone would not mitigate the problem. David stated that the team would apply the methodology of geo-scientific means to arrest the problem.

He informed that borehole drilling would be conducted through which the sub-surface data could be collected precisely and thereby finding the real solutions to the problem.

The geologist informed that the same procedure would be carried in the other locations. The two locations earmarked for investigation include the site below Assam Rifles camp at Mongsenbai ward near Sewak Gate and the other site is located below Chungtia village.
