RC Kohima, GRS join forces against drugs

Rotary Club (RC) of Kohima, in collaboration with G Rio School (GRS), hosted a one-day programme centered around “Awareness on Drug Abuse and Peddling,” at Kevilhouu Rio Auditorium, G. Rio School on October 7.


The event drew the participation of approximately 550 students from five schools spanning from classes 8 to 12.
Speaking on the present scenario of drug abuse and peddling in the Naga society, chairperson, Nagaland State Commission for Women Nginyeih Konyak, highlighted the harrowing facts that traffickers often exploit in the vulnerable segments of society.


In a short speech, Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhütso, MLA shared on “Drug Abuse and its Adverse Effects on Health.”
He gave a detailed explanation on the distinction between beneficial and harmful drugs, underscoring the grave consequences of continued drug abuse, which could ultimately lead to liver failure (Cirrhosis).


He urged the gathered students to actively raise awareness, offer support at the same time nurture a society where individuals could lead healthier lives. In a short presentation, DIGP (Training) Chümoukedima, Imnalensa, underscored on the realm of drug peddling and its repercussions.


He highlighted the existence of the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act enacted in 1985, designed to combat drug trafficking comprehensively. He said the Act aims to prohibit all aspects of drug trafficking, from cultivation and manufacturing to transportation, storage, sale and or purchase.


Imnalensa further explained the Act’s categorization of drug offenses into three levels based on the quantity of drugs involved: small quantity, less than commercial quantity and commercial quantity.
He pointed out that individuals engaged in drug-related activities would not only face legal consequences but also jeopardize their ability to fulfill their social responsibilities.


The event was organized as a step towards creating awareness, fostering a drug-free society and empowering young minds to make informed choices regarding their well-being.
Students from five schools including Rüzhükhrie Hr Sec School, Bayavü Hr Sec School, Mewi School, Vinyüzo Hr Sec School and G Rio School participated in the event.


Earlier, the event was chaired by MD, KOHIMAS, Rtn Dr Keneilhoulie Medom while chaplain, G Rio School, Neilabeinuo Miachieo invoked God’s blessings. A brief highlight on the initiatives of RC Kohima was shared by Rtn Dr Rosemary Dzüvichü, vote of thanks was proposed by president, RC Kohima, Rtn Kevilenuo Solo while a special number was presented by G Rio student, Keziah Mero.
