In yet another discovery, paddy plant as tall as 2.9 metres (9 feet 6 inches) has been found at the residential property of PHE & Cooperation minister Jacob Zhimomi. Soon after learning about the discovery, reportedly the tallest ever found in Nagaland so far, officials from the Agriculture department also visited the site to study the plant.
Speaking to exclusively Nagaland Post, Jacob mentioned that he always had the passion of farming, and collected the seed (Oryza sativa) from within state and planted it in the month of July this year.
He mentioned that no artificial manure/pesticides were used to grow the plant. Within a period of four months, he said that the paddy plant grew upto 9ft 6inch.
On the technical aspects, officials from the Agri department mentioned that the team will be collecting the sample and a study would be carried out about its origin and other aspects.
It may be mentioned that the tallest paddy plant (Oryza sativa) so far in the world measuring 2.8m (9 ft 2 in) tall was discovered in 2005, grown by one Tanaji Nikam of Kolhapur, in Maharashtra.
It may be recalled that late Melhite Kenye, known as Nagaland’s ‘Paddy Man,’ earlier held the Guinness World Record title of having grown the tallest paddy in the world in 1998 measuring around 2.5 meter tall (8 feet 5 inches). Kenye also received Governor’s Gold Medal in 2002 for his feat.
