Various government departments and agencies across the state organised different programmes to equip farmers with knowledge, insights, technology, and products so as to increase their productivity.
Tseminyu: Farmers-scientist interaction was conducted by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Tseminyu on November 15 at the office of District Agricultural Officer, Tseminyu with assistant chief Technical Officer, KVK- Kohima, Dr. Martina Shitiri, as the resource person.
Speaking on “Qualitative Production,” Dr Shitiri pressed on the issue of changing varieties of crops every three years to increase the yield and also to manage disease and pests. Farmers were encouraged to follow scientific organic approach for qualitative production of agricultural crops.
Various challenges faced by the farming community and suitable mitigation measures were discussed, while various scientific management practices of poultry and piggery were also appraised to the farmers particularly on hygiene and bio-security so as to prevent disease outbreak by deputy project director, Dr. Ithika C. Swu.
Pukhato Village: A comprehensive training program on banana fibre extraction and vermi-composting process was held on November 13 at Pukhato Village, Kuhuboto Block, Niuland district by STINER-TFC, NU: SAS, Medziphema campus in collaboration with FPO’s promoted by Entrepreneurs Associates under NERAMAC.
Speaking on the scope and utility of banana plant and vermicompost, project assistant, STINER-TFC, Bikram Ghimere delved into the intricacies of banana as a plant and the various steps from which fibres are extracted from the banana pseudostem. He also accentuated on the importance and scope of vermi-composting in converting household and farm wastes into successful home-based income generating avenues.
The training was focused on creating awareness among the native people to realize the economic values of the rich natural resources available which are often wasted and convert them into livelihood generating activities.
The program was followed by a technical session on banana fibre extraction and its value addition, where MTS, STINER-TFC, Vibito Savino gave step wise practical demonstration of the procedure involved in extraction and its value addition. A practical oriented session on vermi-composting was also conducted and delivered by Bikram Ghimere.
