Traditional Christmas Cake race, the 50th edition was held on December 23 at Mokokchung Town. The race is traditionally every year under the aegis Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC). This year, the event was held in commemoration of the 50th edition of the Cake Race where all the 18 wards of the town took part. During the initial years, the race was organized by the Seasonal Club Mokokchung but was later taken over by the Mokokchung Municipal Council then MTC (town committee).
Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker, Sharingain Longkumer, graced the event as guest of honor and flagged off the race.
Dilong ward emerged as the winner while Lijaba Lijen ward and Arkong ward finished in second and third positions.
This year a “Fancy Dress” competition under the theme “The visit of the Magi” was organised which was participated by 16 wards.
Kichutip ward bagged the first position while Kumlong ward and Alempang ward bagged the second and third places respectively.
On the completion of the race a jubilee program was held where the NLA speaker said that the Cake Race, the much-awaited event was not just about a race but a significant moment to display unity, harmony and brotherhood.
He lauded the efforts of the Seasonal Club for their initiatives in the past, and said that the fruits planted by them (Seasonal Club) were enjoying and hoped that the legacy will continue. Sharingain also released the jubilee souvenir.
Earlier, Apong Pongener, president Seasonal Club delivered a speech reminiscing on the formation of the club and how the cake race was organized. He wished that younger generations will emulate and continue with the tradition.
Short speeches were also delivered by Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji and Limanungsang, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town. At the program, Salangtem ward received the best maintenance ward award while Alempang ward and Aongza ward finished in second and third places. Also, Alempang ward bagged the most promising ward.
