Various students’ bodies hold general session and conference

Various students’ unions like Thenyizumi Students Union (TSU), Wokha Village Students’ Union (WVSU), Jakhama Students’ Union and Mekokla Students’ Union (MSU) held their annual sessions and general conference on December 27 and 28.


TSU: The 70th general conference of Thenyizumi Students Union (TSU) was held under the theme, “Adaptability in a changing world” at Multi-Purpose Hall, Thenyizumi village under Phek district on December 27.
The session was graced by associate professor, Head of Department (HoD), Department of Education, Kohima College Kohima (KCK), Dorothy Swuro, as guest speaker.


In her address, she asked the students to make use of their potential to contribute towards bringing a change in the society. She reminded the students that as responsible individual they should have a determined and positive approach.
Commenting that Naga society was embracing modernisation and westernization, she cautioned the students to be careful as “Nagas have become flexible and adjustable”. Swuro also stressed on the need to preserve and practice the good culture and tradition practiced by the ancestors.


At the programme, VCC Thenyizu, Medothi Rhakho and president Chakhesang Students Union, Avezo Kevin Kapu, delivered greetings. While toppers’ talks were delivered by Metsilu Swiho HSLC top 7 (subject topper in Social Science) and Vetolu Yomi HSLC Top 18.
On the occasion, late Punuhu Dawhuo Memorial Award was also conferred to eight students for their academic excellence in HSLC examinations.


Earlier, presidential address was delivered by president TSU, John Swiho, while a general secretary report was presented by Pukrokho Kezo and education and statistical report by Akhruvo Dawhuo. Rupfusato Theyo presented a special song and a folk song was presented by Thenyizumi Women Society.
The programme was led by Aveto Resu, invocation by pastor CRC Rev. Veshoseyi Rhakho, and benediction by youth pastor TBC, Pusekhoyi Dawhuo.


A career guidance and counselling session was also held with assistant professor, Department of Economic, Pfütsero Government College, Chothazo Nienu, and Motor Vehicle Inspector, Department of Transport, Vede Dawhuo, as resource persons.
During the evening session, Counselling Psychologist Woodstock International School, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand Vepalu Dawhuo, was the session speaker. TSU also honoured the meritorious students in their academics from class nursery till university examinations.

WVSU: Wokha Village Students’ Union (WVSU) held its 74th annual session on Thursday at the multipurpose building Wokha village under the theme “Shaping the Future: Trends and Insights for Tomorrow”. The programme was graced by additional director of Health & Family Welfare Dr. Meribeni Odyuo as the special guest and Sr. Fisheries inspector, Department of Fisheries Aquatic Resources, Government of Nagaland Dr. Nchumbeni Y Humtsoe as the theme speaker.


Speaking at the event, Dr. Meribeni Odyuo enlightened the audience on navigating a path to a better life, emphasizing that students are the architects of their own future. Stressing on the importance of choosing a career aligned with one’s dreams, she suggested exploring fields like agriculture, IT, tourism, entrepreneurship, and skill-based occupations as government sectors is almost saturated now. Encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones, the special guest emphasized on the value of embracing new experiences, perspectives, and adopting positive values.


Dr. Odyuo urged curiosity to be their compass and perseverance as their guiding light, reminding them to seize boundless opportunities. She further shared tips on living better through sufficient sleep, focusing on emotional health, and practicing self-discipline.
The theme speaker motivated students to pursue excellence, emphasizing on the importance of diligent studying and nurturing ambitious dreams. She urged them to persist, stay resilient in the face of challenges, and embrace valuable advice from experienced individuals.

Stressing the infinite nature of learning, Dr. Nchumbeni Y Humtsoe highlighted the impact of education on shaping their future. Above all, she advised students to lead a life that aligns with values pleasing to God and to fulfil their duties sincerely.
The programme was chaired by Nzani B. Tungoe & Khyothungo T. Kikon, invocation was offered by Nzanbeni P. Murry, greetings was also delivered by chairman Wokha Village Council, K Vandan Murry, special number was presented by Stephen Tungoe, vote of thanks was delivered by Nzanthung A. KSCU: Khuzama Students’ Care Union (KSCU) held its 61st general conference under the theme, “Beyond Borders: Shaping the future together’ on December 28 at Khuzama village, Kohima.
Speaking as the resource person at inaugural function, chairman Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Limited (NIDC) Kvulo Lorin, encouraged young people to have global mindset and strengthen education and skill development to the need of the time while having ingenious concern for economy of the.


Lorin underscored the importance of collaborative efforts, expressing that accomplishments are not achievable in isolation, regardless of one’s strength, wealth, or skills and also urged for receptiveness to change in response to evolving circumstances. He emphasized on the interconnectedness of the world, where communication, transactions, relationships, and collaborations transcend geographical boundaries.
Advising against limiting mindsets solely to tribal or regional identities, Lorin cited entrepreneurs as an example and noted that a narrow focus on the Nagaland market might hinder sustainability, encouraging a broader perspective to attract consumers beyond the region. He also stressed on the need to embrace global ideas, overcome insecurities, and promote local products.


Highlighting the evolving education landscape, Lorin pointed out the increasing trend of Nagaland students pursuing diverse subjects abroad, emphasizing that such options are available to those willing to invest in their future.
Referencing an Instagram poll involving 700 participants, where 30% favoured government jobs, 46% preferred startups, and the rest selected other options, Lorin remarked on the changing dynamics and the rapid pace of transformation. He emphasized the importance of clarity in career choices, advocating for a global mindset to adapt to the changing job market and encouraged the students to acquire both education and skills.


He highlighted the significance of financial prudence, focusing not only on earnings but also on savings and living within one’s economic means. Earlier, the programme was chaired by publicity and information secretary Zevi Khizho, and president KSCU, Thejangulie Sale delivered the welcome note and Tsahoro Group presented folk song. JSU: Jakhama Students’ Union celebrated its 57th annual conference on December 28, at Campion School Ground, Jakhama Village, under the theme “Go Green to Breathe Clean”, with Kevipodi Sophie, MLA as the chief guest and Colonel Gaurav Singh SC, SM Commanding Officer-164 Naga Regt as special guest.


A press release from JSU stated that Sophie in his speech emphasized on the importance of punctuality in students’ life, noting that time would not wait for them. He added that with fast technology world, a student should work hard for excellence and there was no room for half-hearted student as the competition spirit was high.


The MLA further urged the students not to believe in backdoor appointment as the state government has taken big task to check all appointment on the cause. He also highlighted the importance of education, stating that education was important even to become an entrepreneur.


Special guest, Colonel Singh highlighted the important role of youth to work for public good, community, etc. He encouraged the students to be hard working and urged the community to work together for public good. He also expressed appreciation to the student’s initiative for the promotion of environment with the theme.


The convenor, Jakhama Students’ Union Education Trust, advocate Kezhokhoto Savi, presented the latest financial position and briefly highlighted how to avail the financial sponsorship, while president, Jakhama Gazetted Officer Krotho (JGOK), highlighted the importance of sanitation.


Invocation was offered by pastor JCRC, John Zao, programme was chaired by Shieku Sophie, welcome address by president JSU, Keviseto Tase, and special number by Lolevinu Zhotso.


MSU: Mekokla Students’ Union (MSU) held its 72nd annual session on December 27, at MSU office, public ground Mekokla village, with VDB secretary, Eliyamo Yanthan, as special invitee and P. B. Sen Yanthan as theme speaker.
A press release by MSU stated that Eliyamo challenged the students to be responsible in all round development of the village and urged them to be active in promoting peace and development in the village.


Speaking on the session, theme speaker P B Sen Yanthan emphasised on the current situation in Mekokla village under the theme “Enumero Conflab: The Current Context in Mekokla Village”.
He stressed on the importance of love and unity in the society, lamenting that the culture of love, peace and unity passed on by forefathers have long been replaced by hatred, disunity, division in both society and church. He challenged villagers and students’ body to be proactive in restoring peace and harmony in the village.


The literary session started with an invocation prayer by catechist St. Paul Catholic Church, James Yanthan, programme was chaired by Thüngbemo Kikon and Sorenbeni P Yanthan, prayer of blessings to the students by pastor Mekokla Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. LL Kikon and benediction by Bentsolo A. Kikon.
