The inter district Government High School (GHS) and Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) tournament 2024, funded by Samagra Shiksha Nagaland kicked off at Meriema ground on Tuesday.


Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural programme, Director of School Education, Wonthungo Tsopoe, urged the physical education teachers to recognize the pivotal role they play in nurturing latent sporting talent. He stressed on the need for sustained encouragement to unlock students’ potential at the same time emphasizing continuous motivation, he outlined the path for students to excel nationally and internationally.


He underscored the significance of instilling this ethos through sports, promoting mutual respect and collective appreciation and also highlighted the comprehensive nature of education, extending beyond academics to encompass holistic personal development, emphasizing sports as an integral component. In the Naga context, he addressed the prevailing lack of familial support for sports, urging a shift in mindset.


The director also advocated for moral discipline, fostering both physical and spiritual well-being concurrently, emphasizing the enduring nature of sportsmanship. Tsopoe encouraged aspirational thinking, determination, and disciplined living, asserting that such attributes coupled with a supportive environment, could catalyse positive societal change and pave the way for a brighter future. He further urged the part takers to follow disciplined sportsmanship throughout the two-day event.


Participants from all 16 districts are taking part in the two-day sports event which is played in three locations- Merima ground (athletics), Indira Stadium (Sepaktakraw) and P Khel, Kohima village (badminton).


The programme was chaired by physical education officer, Vitsolie Keyho, invocation by pastor, Phezoucha Baptist Chruch, Keduoneituo Yhome; special number by T.M. GHSS, administration of oath by competition referee Neilazetuo Khezhie.
