Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)- All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig, Nagaland Centre, Nagaland University, School of Agricultural Sciences , Medziphema campus conducted a 3-day hands-on training program for animal health workers and pig farmers under the Tribal Sub Plan from March 26 to 28, with a total of 64 participants.
The program was graced by Pro-Vice Chancellor of NU, SAS Medziphema campus professor Akali Sema, as the special guest who emphasised on the crucial role played by pig farmers in Naga society and expressed optimism that with the appropriate training, Nagaland would achieve self-sufficiency in meeting its local pork demand.
On the program’s inaugural day, Tsarila Z.T. Sangtam, a PhD Scholar from the Department of Livestock Production and Management, provided an extensive overview of farm bio-security measures and the optimal feeding regimen for grower and finisher pigs. She stressed the critical importance of erecting a secure fence and gate to safeguard the animals, along with maintaining meticulous visitor logs.
On the second day, VFATI-Medziphema lecturer Dr. Kekhrietsolie Keyho, provided insights to participants on the selection process for breeding gilts and boarlings. He covered various factors to consider, including physical attributes, temperament, and performance data such as birth and weaning weights, along with litter sizes. He also recommended mating animals based on their size and deworming pregnant gilts and sows either at 100 days of pregnancy or two weeks before farrowing. Dr. Keyho provided guidance on caring for pregnant animals nearing farrowing and new-born piglets.
Following each session, there was an exchange between farmers and veterinarians, providing farmers with valuable insights into effective pig farming practices. The farmers pledged to implement efficient pig farming methods to meet the growing demand for pork in the state.
On the final day of the program, head of the department of Livestock Production and Management (LPM) at NU: SAS, and chairman of the program, professor Nizamuddin delivered the welcoming address. The special guest, Dean of NU: SAS, Medziphema, Dr. L. Daiho, commended the project in-charge and farmers for their enthusiastic participation in technical training aimed at adapting to the evolving farming landscape.
Associate professor and professor/In-charge of ICAR-AICRP on Pig at Nagaland Centre, NU: SAS, Medziphema, Dr. M. Catherine Rutsa, delivered the closing remarks. Following the program, associate professor, Department of Livestock Production and Management, Dr. Razouneinuo Zuyie, conveyed the vote of thanks. Additionally, materials such as buckets, hammers, medicines, maize powder, and wheat bran were distributed to the farmers to support them in their farming endeavours.
