Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nagaland has served a show cause notice on state deputy chief minister and BJP star campaigner Yanthungo Patton over his remark made during election campaign for People Democratic Alliance (PDA) consensus candidate Dr. Chumben Murry of National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) at LTC Conference Hall, Wokha Town on April 5, 2024.
In an order, CEO Nagaland Vyasan R stated that a video of Patton, on social media platform has been viewed. The CEO also stated that as per report received from the district election officer and deputy commissioner, Wokha, the video was part of the campaign speech made by Y Patton in favour of PDA consensus candidate Dr. Chumben Murry during the meeting at LTC Conference Hall, Wokha Town on April 5, 2024.
CEO noted that in the video, Patton was seen to be “inciting” village functionaries such as council chairman, gaon buras and polling agents to cast multiple votes and “hence interfere with the free exercise of electoral right of the villagers.”
CEO stated that such interference was violative of Section 171C of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and impersonation was an offence under Section 171 D of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.
Therefore, CEO has asked Y Patton to show-cause at the earliest why action should not be taken against him.
