Officers’ Hill Colony (OHC) was declared as the cleanest ward in Kohima town this afternoon during the pre-Christmas celebration cum annual wards/shops felicitation program organized by the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) at the KMC conference hall.
P.R Hill colony and and agri/forest colony was declared as second and third cleanest ward in Kohima.
Commissioner and secretary of Home (RR & NSDMA) Khrienuo C. Metha who graced the occasion as chief guest lauded the winning wards for being able to inspire the residents and help them understand the importance of cleanliness.
Metha also highlighted the KMC’s effort to keep Kohima clean and noted that the trash pickers were the unsung heroes in Kohima and said, they were the ones who came in trucks and picked the garbage and disposed them. In this regard, she said it was the duty of every individual to dispose garbage, unusable items in a civilized manner.
With litter becoming a huge environmental issue, Metha pointed out the complacency and indifference of residents in Kohima who continued to litter despite fully understanding what litter does to the environment.
“Our greed for land has narrowed our rivers into drainages” said Metha and added that the main causes of littering were laziness and ignorance which could be attributed to poor parenting and education.
She appealed the ward leaders to set the example to its residents to go back to walking as much as possible and expressed a much cleaner and better town to live in.
KMC administrator Kovi Meyase said for 2016, the basic requisites for choosing the award were not just the Christmas decorations and illuminations but sanitation and cleanliness in the wards year round.
The award for the cleanest shop was awarded to K. Florist Taxi Stand followed by United Traders, main town bagging the second prize and City Grains, Themezie bagging the third prize.
