CSU highlights discrepancies in government schools

Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU), during its first phase of the educational tour, observed some discrepancies such as shortage of teachers and lack of basic infrastructure, which it said needed to be immediately readdressed by the authority in charge.

In a press release, CSU president, Pfhülo Sara, and education secretary, Vetsokho Lohe, said the union from first week of April to May 10 covered 77 government institutions under District Education Officer (DEO) Phek, Sub-Divisional Education Officers (SDEOs) of Chozuba, Pfutsero and Phek.

During the tour, CSU said the team was shocked to find multiple schools in a deplorable state and almost every school without adequate teachers, particularly for subjects like Mathematics, Science, English etc. at Middle and High School levels. The union said the schools were in need of at least 20 additional teachers.

CSU said schools, namely Khutsokhuno, Dzulhami, Rukizu, Khuza, Phusachodu etc. require buildings, classrooms, staff rooms, and kitchens to create an environment conducive to learning.

Cautioning that the union would not remain a silent spectator when the students are denied quality education, CSU has appealed to the concerned authorities to rationalise teachers and take necessary steps as per the grievances to fill the gaps so that quality education is provided for the students.
CSU warned that failing to adhere to the appeal would compel the union to resort to “democratic ways and means to achieve justice and demand”.
