In compliance with the directives issued by the Naga Students’ Federation, Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has reiterated its strong opposition to the extension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, in Nagaland.
AKM president Lanutoshi Aier and general secretary Satemmongba said the extension of AFSPA compelled AKM to declare non-cooperation on the armed forces operating under theprovisions of AFSPA. AKM said AFSPA had severely impacted the lives of the people, infringing upon their fundamental rights and freedom.
Terming AFSPA as a “draconian nature of the law” AKM said it had often led to human rights violation, besides creating an atmosphere of fear and distrust within the communities. AKM urged upon the Central government to repeal the AFSPA in Nagaland without any further delay as it was imperative that the government honoured the rights and freedoms of all citizens, and restore a sense of normalcy and security in the region.
AKM also cited the “unfortunate Oting incident in Mon district” to underscore the urgent need for the repeal of this oppressive law. It is crucial for the authorities to address these issues swiftly to ensure the protection and well-being of the people of Nagaland,” AKM said.
