Awareness on oral health held in Kohima, Longleng

Oral health camp cum awareness programmes were held in Kohima for the or the student athletes of Indira Gandhi Sports Academy and in Longleng Town Baptist Church, on May 26.


Kohima: An oral health camp cum awareness programme for the student athletes of Indira Gandhi Sports Academy, was organised by the department of Youth Resources & Sports (YRS) in collaboration with Nagaland Institute of Science and Technology and Kekhro Smile Foundation, at IG Stadium, on Sunday.


Special guest during the camp, director, YRS, Kethosituo Sekhose, in his address highlighted the need for dental health care among the students. He said there were 146 student athletes at IG Sports Academy who were studying at various schools and colleges. He disclosed that these students under the care of the department have very less easy access to dental healthcare facilities and that most them were having one health issue or the other. He pointed out that over 50 students were plagued by dental health problems and therefore the department felt it necessary to organise the camp.


He said a person’s natural teeth were irreplaceable and therefore everyone should take good care of it. He observed that the awareness to take care ones dental and oral hygiene was gradually growing among the general masses.


Sekhose said the students were lucky that dentists had come to teach them on how to take care of the dental health as such facilities and guidance were absent in the past. He thanked the visiting doctors and healthcare workers. The programme was chaired by additional director, YRS, Megolhu Dolie while awareness on oral healthcare and screening of the students was done by Kekhro Smile Foundation. (Correspondent)


Longleng: National Oral Health Program (NOHP) Longleng District conducted an awareness program on oral health and oral cancer with the youths of Longleng Town Baptist Church on May 26.


A press statement by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Longleng, Dr. Tiasunep informed that the resource person for the program District Nodal Officer (DNO), NOHP Dr. Nichukholie Vupru, spoke on the importance of oral health for the overall wellbeing of the body. In order to maintain good oral hygiene, he emphasized on the importance of regular brushing, limit intake of sugary food items, eating more fruits and vegetables rich in fibres and to avoid tobacco products. He also shared on the harmful effects of tobacco leading to oral cancer and other health problems.


The DNO stressed on the benefits of regular dental check-up for early detection of oral cancers and timely intervention of oral health problems. The team was led by Dr. Nichukholie Vupru, Dental Surgeon and Media officer, Dr Chumei Nyam and Angshom Chemdok.
