Kma & Mon discuss monsoon preparedness

Kohima and Mon District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Tuesday held separate meetings and deliberated on any untoward incidents that may arise due to monsoon season and reviewed preparedness to tackle such a calamity.


Kohima: DDMA Kohima held a meeting to deliberate on the availability of goods and services during potential calamities owing to the monsoon season.
According to a DIPR report, the disaster preparedness meeting, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, took place at the Conference Hall of DC Kohima Office.


At the meeting, DC Ramnikant reiterated the prohibition on roadside dumping of construction and other materials. He asked contractors to clean drainages before the monsoon to mitigate disaster risks.
In this regard, the members decided to conduct a social work initiative to further reinforce preparedness.


Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) administrator, Lanusenla, emphasised the importance of clearing drainages in all colonies. She highlighted ongoing drainage clearance efforts in the town area and colonies, particularly mentioning the need for proper drainage along the road from Bayavü Junction to Vinyüzo School.


The power department highlighted the importance of regularly clearing tree branches that could hinder power lines. Food & Civil Supplies (F&CS) department was directed to ensure that godowns were fully stocked at all times, with supplies sufficient to last at least three months.


DDMA members also addressed the need to prepare for disease outbreaks, particularly dengue, during the monsoon season and deliberated on preparedness for blood transfusion and hospitalization. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kohima office was also asked to assess and ensure the availability of life-saving drugs. The District Agriculture Officer (DAO) Kohima assured to make scenario-based preparations in the agriculture sector.


The board members agreed on the need to have machinery such as excavators and tow trucks ready and stationed. All district offices were instructed to complete and update the India Disaster Resource Network (IDRN) form and submit it to the DC office within two weeks.


Mon: DDMA Mon held a quarterly meeting at the Conference Hall of DC Mon Office, wherein the members deliberated on the pre – monsoon preparedness in the district.
According to a DIPR report, chairing the meeting, DC and chairman DDMA, Mon, Ajit Kumar Verma, said there were lots of challenges – road blockages, issues of food, medicine and other commodities. He urged all the concerned departments to be well-prepared to face all those challenges.


Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mon, K Temjennaro Longkumer, explained sanitisation as a part of monsoon preparedness.
Lamenting that so far, no successful social work has been conducted in Mon town, she urged the officers to start from their respective offices.


Longkumer also highlighted the importance of educating people about the cleanliness, sanitisation, and maintenance of drainage. During the meeting, the Food & Civil Supplies (F&CS) department shared information about the availability of essential commodities in the district, while road infrastructure sector/alternative routes/machinery functionality was highlighted by PWD (R&B), PWD (N/H) NHIDCL and BRO.

Executive Engineer PWD (R/B) said that they have formed a task force for the monsoon season. The EE mentioned that the department has started clearing the road and maintaining the drainage.
District Hospital Mon authority informed the members about the essential drugs/medicines/manpower availability in the District Hospital Mon.
