Along with the rest of the world, Nagaland also observed World Environment Day by conducting cleanliness drive, plating of trees and other awareness programmes in various colonies, government and educational institutions on June 5.
The theme for this year is “Our Land, Our Future, We Are Generation Restoration,” revolving around land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, emphasising the importance of these issues in achieving sustainable development.
KOHIMA: Directorate of Employment, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship observed the day in Kohima. On the occasion, additional director, Savio Visa, gave a brief explanation about how to conserve and protect our environment by planting more trees and to practice afforestation. The celebration was marked by taking a pledge along with staffs and trainees of the Directorate of Employment Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship. Joint director, H. Alongse Sangtam, highlighted about how in 1973 the World Environment Day was formally practice and continued till then. The event concluded with tree plantation drive within office premises. Department of Planning & Transformation also organized a “Greening the Earth” initiative by planting tree saplings at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima.
OSD (Planning) & SDG Nodal Officer Nayantara Sasikumar, at the event spoke on key objective of the initiative. Sasikumar, and Add. Development Commissioner, Planning N Nlumo Murry planted Bauhinia tree saplings respectively at Civil Secretariat complex. SDGCC also distributed around two hundred cherry saplings at the secretariat.
KOHIMA FOREST DIVISION: Kohima Forest Division (KFD) in collaboration with Nagaland Board of School Education’s commemoration of 50 years and Naga Hospital Authority Kohima observed the day by organising “Awareness Run”.
The run was flagged off by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force (PCCF & HoFF), Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Nagaland, Dharmendra Prakash. A total of 100 students from 31 schools in Kohima participated in the awareness run, which started at Phoolbari Junction and culminated at Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home.
DIMAPUR: District Administration of Dimapur, in collaboration with local government schools, organized a programme-cum-plantation drive under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) on June 5. EAC, Dimapur, Imtijungla Lemtur speaking at the event, shared a brief overview of the NCAP. GHSS Lengrijan, GHS Sarbura, GMS Duncan Ao, GPS Phevima Kacharigaon, GPS Industrial Village, GMS Naga New Model Ao, GPS Naga New Model Lotha and GPS Naga New Model Angami participated in the mass plantation drive in different parts of Dimapur.
DMC: Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) observed the day at Dimapur State stadium, along with the culmination of the fortnight Single Use and Multi Layered Plastic Advocacy and prize distribution for colonies with the maximum collection. Delivering keynote address DMC administrator, Manpai Phom, said that improper disposal of plastic waste was the leading factor for floods in Dimapur during monsoons or after heavy showers of rain.
Also delivering a short speech, president, Team Better Dimapur, Mhonjan Lotha, stressed upon the lifestyle while dealing with plastics. In the competition, Neisatuo Colony bagged the first prize, Kevijau Colony second prize, and Imkonglenden Youth Organization bagged the third prize.
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE: Department of Agriculture observed the day at Agri Expo Chumoukedima on June 5. Advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan graced the occasion. The programme was chaired by C Peter Yanthan, Addl. Director, department of Agriculture. A total of 86 participants including officials from various district attended the programme.
CPO: To mark the day, Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) along with its frontal organizations organised a tree plantation drive at Sanzho Bridge, Sedzü River, Thenyizu village under Phek district. Launching the drive, advisor of CAWD and Taxes, Kudecho Khamo called upon the people of the state to not destroy or damage the environment but to make efforts for its protection and conservation. He also called for efforts to strengthen the resolutions adopted by the Chakhesang Public Organisation for nature’s conservation and the imposition of a ban on the import of pigs/pork into its jurisdiction.
In a keynote address, vice-president CPO, Vecito Dozo, highlighted the significance of World Environment Day. President Chakhesang Students Union (CSU), Pfhulo Sara, in his speech pointed out the rising impact of global warming and the increase in temperature, among other issues. The programme was led by VCC Thenyizu Medothi Rhakho, and began with an invocation by C. Kroso Kezo, Pastor of Thenyizu Baptist Church (TBC). The vote of thanks was proposed by Vepozoyi Theyo, president of Chokri Area Public Organisation (CAPO).
WOKHA: Wokha Forest Division and Doyang Planting Division in collaboration with Nagaland Board of School Education organised a programme to commemorate the day at Lotha Hoho Ki, Wokha. Assistant Conservator of Forests, Rajiv Shankar, and Divisional Forest Officer Wokha & Doyang, Suman W. M Sivachar and Skill Development Officer, Anuranjan Singh, spoke at the programme. Earlier, “Walk For Awareness” was organised for students under the Slogan “Our Land, Our future, We are Generation Restoration”.
ABOI: Police Engineering Project, in collaboration with the 11th IR Battalion, observed the day by spearheading a plantation drive at the 11th IRB headquarters, Abou, Mon. The event was led by the Chief Engineer and Executive Engineer with the collaborative efforts of PEP officers and jawans of the 11th IR, alongside Ms Hexed, proprietor, Thepfusatuo Rio, who contributed additional trees for the initiative.
The team planted approximately 1,000 trees, underscoring their dedication to enhancing the region’s green cover and promoting ecological health. The plantation drive involved extensive tree-planting activities across key locations, including the officer’s mess, the church compound, the Commandant’s residence, and along the roadsides at the 11th IR Headquarters, Aboi.
ZUNHEBOTO: District Administration, Zunheboto in collaboration with District Election Office observed World Environment Day at Town Square, Zunheboto. Earlier, before the formal programme, in commemoration of NBSE 50 years of its existence and with an aim to create awareness of a healthier environment, the department of Schools Education in collaboration with DFO (Forest) organized Half Marathon. Large scale plantation and cleanliness drive was also conducted across the town headed by DC Zunheboto, Rahul Bhanudas Mali with Superintendent of Police, DFO, other concerned government offices, NGOs, Student bodies and Zunheboto District Badminton Association.
MEDZIPHEMA: Medziphema sub-division conducted a mass social work and carried out plantation drive at Medziphema sub-division. The mass social work and plantation drive was participated by all offices, shops, residents, local bodies, educational institutions and public. Plantation drive was organized by Chakhroma Public Organization in collaboration with Chakhroma Youth Organization, Chakhroma Students Union, Forest Ranger Medziphema, Forest Beat Dimapur Division, Medziphema Royal FC, SFS School and Ghaspani BN 7th Assam Rifles.
NOKLAK: ‘F’ Company 3rd NAP BN, Noklak observed the day in collaboration with district administration Noklak and Department of Environment, Forest & Climatic Changes at Noklak. In his speech DC Noklak, Arikumba said that the focus of celebrating World Environment Day was to protect the environment and sustainable life in the future. To mark the occasion, plantation drive was held at 3rd NAP Camp, Noklak led by the Deputy Commissioner, Noklak.
NIMS: A joint collaboration plantation drive between the Government Industrial Training Institute, Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) and Divisional Forest Officer was conducted at NIMSR Kohima to commemorate the day.
PEREN: Peren Forest Division in collaboration with Schools under Peren District and Jalukie Town Youth Organisation celebrated the day at Jalukie Town main market. To mark the day, activities such as marathon race for 12 Schools of Peren district under two categories, seedling distribution, plantation drive, mass social work and awareness program were organised.
KIPHIRE: Kiphire Forest Division observed the day in collaboration with 9 NBSE affiliated Schools (Loyola Hr. Sec. School, Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Good Shepherd School, El Beth School, Cambridge School, Saramati View Modern School, Trinity School, Agape Hr. Sec. School and Holy Cross School) under Kiphire Town and the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kiphire. The event commenced with the Half Marathon Race for the students, which was flagged off by SP Kiphire, Chinese Chakhesang. The event was hosted by the Loyola Higher Secondary School.
DoHE: Directorate of Higher Education (DoHE) organised fruit tree plantation drive in the office premises at Kohima, in which 150 fruit saplings, provided by minister of Higher Education and Tourism, Temjen Imna Along.
PHEK: World Environment Day cum Half Marathon in commemoration of 50 years of Nagaland Board of School Education was organised by the department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Phek Division and Nagaland Board of School Education at Phek district. On the occasion, DC Phek, John Tsulise Sangtam and Superintendent of Police, Phek, Dr. Pritpal Kaur Batra encouraged the students to be aware of the deforestation and focus on tree plantation and how to protect the environment. To mark the day, a marathon race was organised which was flagged off by Superintendent of Police, Phek, Dr. Pritpal Kaur Batra.
MOKOKCHUNG: In Mokokchung, the day was observed at Shisalen Riju, organized by DPDB, Mokokchung, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Mokokchung, under the Aegis of BBBP. Commissioner & Secretary (Rtd.) & Founder of Earth Alliance Thangi Manen addressed on the grim reality of environmental degradation, citing floods, landslides, air, and water pollution as consequences of human impact. ADC & Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) Administrator, Chumlamo Humtsoe echoed the call for environmental stewardship, highlighting initiatives like waste segregation and composting at the household level in Mokokchung. To commemorate the day and to promote environmental awareness and action among the youth”, a Half Marathon Green Run was organized by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) in collaboration with the District Education Officer (DEO). A total of 12 schools participated in the marathon.
ANGAMI YOUTH ORGANISATION: Angami Youth Organisation, in collaboration with Tourism department, organised plantation and cleanliness drive commemorating WED, at Kisama Heritage village. A total number of 250 saplings were planted where 200 students took part along with Miss Nagaland Neiketuno Sechu and DC Kohima Kumar Ramnikant.
TUENSANG: To commemorate the day, District Level Half Marathon was organised at Loyem Ground Tuensang Town. The event was graced by Khelen Singh, DFO Tuensang as special guest.
LONGLENG: Yingli College, Longleng observed the day at the programme organised jointly by the Department of Environmental Sciences and NSS. As part of the programme saplings were planted by the students and teaching faculty, which was provided by Forest department, Longleng.
PUGHOBOTO: To mark the day, cleanliness and plantation drive for all departments and villages under Pughoboto Sub-Division was organised by the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Pughoboto.
CHESSORE: The day was observed at Chessore, Shamator and its surrounding villages by spreading awareness message to conserve the environment for a better and healthy future by organizing mass social work at Chessore Town. Government Higher Secondary School, Chessore, St. Christopher School Chessore Village, GBs and DBs led by the head GB of Chessore village and town took part in the mass social work and Plantation drive.
TIZIT: On the occasion, a mass social work was conducted at Tizit Town, Mon. To mark the day, the staff of the Additional Deputy Commissioner Office, Tizit, also planted trees at their office premises for which the saplings were provided by the forest department.
CHOZUBA: Mass social work was organised to commemorate the day at Chozuba, Phek. Cleanliness drive cum waste management collections were monitored by Ward authorities (GBs, Chairman, Sanitation Committee), Business Union, religious places, women and student organisation under Chozuba Town.
ATOIZU: Atoizu Sub-division observed the day by organising tree- planting ceremony at the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, led by Dr. Samuel Akho Konyak P, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Atoizu. It was followed by planting of tree saplings in all government offices.
PUNGRO: On the occasion, residents of Pungro Town, Kiphire came together and conducted mass social work. All ward GBs and chairmen supervised their respective wards along with the chamber of commerce, Pungro.
NPP: National People’s Party Nagaland State executives carried out a special tree plantation drive at the Referral Hospital Complex under the theme, “Our land, Our future “. The event was organized by the Frontal Organizations of NPP Nagaland State –led by president A Nyanmei Konyak and his team, state executives council and the Youth Front.
Shoixe Village: Shoixe Village under Satakha Sub Division, celebrated the day where around 2000 trees sapling were planted by the village’s GBs, Council Chairman, along with village elders an public.
GMS Xelhozhe: GMS Xelhozhe in collaboration with Shine Agri and Allied cooperative society conducted Cleanliness Drive and Tree plantation on World Environment Day on June 5.
NSS unit RGHSS: NSS unit RGHSS, Kohima observed World Environment Day on June 5 by conducting a seminar followed by tree plantation and cleanliness drive.
CHAKHROMA PUBLIC ORGANISATION: As part of its celebration of 150th year of formation of Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) scheduled on November 2024, the CPO organised a tree plantation drive in all the Angami Villages under the Chakhroma area. The drive began with an invocation by, Chakhroma Baptist Church Council (CBCC) Executive Secretary Keneitsole Keyho. CPO president Zhato Kimho, informed that the drive was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change. He reported that approximately 500 saplings were distributed to various villages under the CPO. The trees consisted of ornamental and flowering species. Meanwhile, Chumoukedima Town Youth Organisation (CTYO) president Avi Makritsu, mentioned that they also purchased saplings from other nurseries to increase the number of tree planted.
Okusa Toyota Dimapur: Okusa Toyota Dimapur observed the day at its 2S Facility, Thilixu village. Around 45 saplings were planted within the stretch of Okusa Toyato service centre till Thakhehu gate. At the short programme, importance of the day was shared by the managing director Y Vikheho Swu. Okusa Toyota’s role and response to environment was shared by service manager Aolem Chang.
