MGM Higher Secondary School hosted a Cancer Awareness Seminar cum Free Consultation organized by Mar Gregorius Orthodox Church Dimapur and St. Thomas Mission Society Dimapur ON Saturday at the school premise. The event aimed to raise awareness about cancer among various groups including students, faculty, parents, church members, and the local community.
The seminar featured prominent oncologists Dr. Aby K Babu, Head and Neck Cancer surgeon from Faith Hospital Dimapur, and Dr. Vishala Varghese, Radiation Oncologist from CIHSR, 4th Mile, Dimapur. They provided crucial insights into cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.
Dr. Aby K Babu delivered a detailed presentation on the dangers of tobacco consumption, linking it directly to various types of cancers beyond the commonly known mouth, throat, and lung cancers. He cited research indicating 72 carcinogenic elements in tobacco, underscoring its role in DNA damage and cell cycle disruption. Dr. Babu emphasized that all forms of tobacco, including passive smoking, pose significant health risks due to their carcinogenic nicotine content, which impairs the body’s repair mechanisms.
Dr. Vishala Varghese focused on breast cancer awareness, stressing the importance of early detection through regular screenings to improve treatment outcomes. Her session provided valuable information on identifying malignant breast lumps and seeking timely medical attention.
Following the seminar, both doctors offered free consultations to attendees, including parents, teachers, and students, facilitating immediate access to expert advice and medical guidance.
