Heavy rains predicted till July 8

Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has predicted widespread heavy to extremely severe rainfall in the state until July 8, adding that the showers could be accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning.

In a weather update issued by its joint chief executive officer Johnny Ruangmei on Monday, the NSDMA said extremely heavy rainfall was expected during this period in the districts of Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator and Tuensang, adding that Kiphire, Phek, Noklak, Shamator and Tuensang were likely to experience most rain among the districts.

As an “orange alert” has been issued for these five districts from July 2 to 4, the NSDMA stressed taking necessary precautionary measures during this time and exercise caution from lightning strikes and gale winds which could cause disruption in communication and connectivity.

Due to the likelihood of excessive precipitation in the hill sector, Nagaland’s lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, were likely to be impacted by water logging and flash floods.

As all the major rivers of the state would witness a surge in water level, it has been advised that the public refrain from picnicking and fishing near river banks. Farmers have also been advised not to camp/sleep over nights beside river banks as flash floods could occur.

NSDMA has requested all district disaster management authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and properties during this monsoon period.
