Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) said the Blood Bank attached to District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) was running without an operational generator since the last three years, terming this as an utter negligence and total disregard for the lives of the citizens of Nagaland.
In spite of an urgent letter written to the principal director Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) for a generator in March, DAYO lamented that no action had been taken so far. It pointed out that the Blood Bank had singularly covered entire Nagaland and parts of Assam for a long time.
DAYO acknowledged that providing and ensuring availability of safe life-saving blood transfusion with matching blood types round the clock was itself a whole ecosystem of technical expertise and selfless dedication. However, DAYO cautioned that all these would be rendered futile without power backup as there was frequent loadshedding and would result in loss of precious human lives.
Demanding that this “shameful state of affair” should be immediately rectified, it warned that the personnel concerned would be held responsible. DAYO said that over the years it had been spreading public awareness, community participation and maintaining a functional list of potential blood donors.
Noting that Dimapur had been vulnerable to dengue, especially with the onset of monsoon, DAYO said that if H&FW department was found wanting and did not pull up its socks to meet any outbreak of vector-borne disease, the citizens would not be mere mute spectators.
