Coconut Development Board (CDB) regional unit Guwahati in collaboration with District Horticulture Office, Niuland observed World coconut Day-cum-district level workshop under the theme “Coconut for a circular economy: Building partnership for maximum value” at Green Park SHN on Monday.
Gracing the event as guest of honour, DC Niuland, Sarah S. Jamir emphasized the potential of coconut farming in Nagaland and its benefits to the local economy, health, and agriculture.
She lauded the organizers for highlighting the importance of coconut as a valuable agricultural product that significantly contributes to the economy and daily life.
Sarah pointed out that the coconut tree has been often referred to as a “three-generation tree” because it bears fruit for 60-80 years, symbolizing a sustainable source of income across generations.
She therefore urged the department of Horticulture to prioritize testing soil suitability and the climate of various areas before encouraging farmers to invest in coconut cultivation.
She also underscored the need for careful planning and analysis to ensure that the region was conducive to coconut farming, thereby minimizing potential risks for farmers.
Sarah encouraged the department to train farmers in intercropping and integrated farming methods, which would help them sustain an income while waiting for the coconut trees to mature and bear fruit.
She further warned against malpractices and encouraged the department to identify genuine farmers by verifying their backgrounds to ensure that subsidies were allocated to the farmers.
Various schemes of CDB for promoting scientific coconut farming was shared by CDB technical assistant Kamal Baishya. To mark the day, a coconut sapling was planted by DC along with District Horticulture Officer (DHO) Niuland, Temsu Longkumer and participants.
At the technical session resource person HI Dr Jangyukala spoke on “Scientific coconut cultivation technologies” and SASARD professor Dr Chandan spoke on “Value addition on coconut, integrated disease-pest management on coconut”. Success story was also shared by progressive farmer Chozukhu Nyekha.
