The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) has strongly condemned the Supreme Court’s recent decision to deny prosecution of the 30 personnel involved in the tragic killings at Oting and Mon on December 4th and 5th, 2021.
In a press statement, the union called the decision a violation of justice and fairness, principles that underpin any democratic society. KSU expressed shock and outrage at the ruling, which they believe undermines public trust in the judiciary, a system meant to protect the rights and dignity of citizens.
KSU highlighted that the Supreme Court’s refusal to hold those responsible for these heinous acts accountable challenges the very foundation of human rights in India.
They further criticized the protection of military personnel under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), stating that it emboldens further impunity and sets a dangerous precedent where government-backed forces can commit atrocities without facing consequences.
KSU vowed to withdraw its trust in what it termed a “malicious and unjust judicial system” and pledged to bring the case to international attention. The union said it plans to document the tragic events of December 2021 in a comprehensive book and release soon, which will serve as a testament to their commitment to justice and expose the systematic failures that led to the loss of innocent lives. KSU also called on both national and international communities to join them in condemning this grave injustice and to work toward preventing such atrocities in the future. They appealed for support in their ongoing battle for justice.
