A gas leakage near North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) in Chümoukedima has triggered widespread concern among local residents.
In a statement, Sr. Jibitha, a student of MSW at NEISSR, informed that a gas leak, which began three days ago, has been affecting one of the most densely populated areas of the town. This area is home to schools, churches, and colleges, making it a crucial zone for daily activities.
However, since the leak began, these roads have become unsafe for use, forcing many to avoid the route altogether. The pungent smell of gas has raised serious health concerns, with potential risks such as respiratory issues, headaches, and dizziness. Despite the urgency, there has been no significant response from the authorities concern, causing frustration among locals.
Residents, especially parents, are particularly worried about the safety of children attending nearby schools. One concerned individual highlighted that prolonged exposure could lead to severe health consequences if not addressed promptly. Jibitha said that local activists have pointed out that this incident was just one example of how poorly the area’s infrastructure had been maintained.
As one social activist remarked, “This isn’t just about the gas leak. It’s about how the government has failed to invest in proper safety measures. If something like this can happen near schools and churches, imagine what could happen in other parts of the region.”
Jibitha said the gas leak was not only a health risk, but also an environmental hazard. She cautioned that prolonged exposure to the gas could harm the local ecosystem, contaminating soil and water sources, which the community relies on for agriculture. Sr. Jibitha urged the authorities to intervene swiftly to mitigate the situation before it escalates further.
