Nagaland: ZLSU launches indefinite agitation

Zeliang Students’ Union (ZLSU) has launched indefinite agitation demanding retention or replacement of math and science teachers. According to ZLSU media cell all government schools and educational offices under Peren district will be closed.

During the first phase launched on October 9, 2024 only educational offices were closed. The union informed that the agitation will continue unless the pressing demands for the retention or replacement of teachers were satisfactorily addressed by the concerned department.

ZLSU said the recent rationalization exercise carried out by the Department of School Education which involved transferring of teachers without replacement in the middle of the academic sessions has affected some of the best-performing government schools in Peren district.

The union informed during the proposed shutdown, students will not have access to their usual educational environment, leading to disruptions in learning and academic progress.

However, ZLSU believed the action was necessary to compel the authorities to take immediate and decisive action concerning the educational system in the district. It therefore called on all stakeholders—students, parents, educators, and community leaders—to unite together in support of this initiative.

ZLSU therefore appealed to the DoSE to reconsider its adamant stance for the sake of the welfare of the students’ community. The union cautioned that they were prepared to escalate the protest to any extent, and the concerned department will be held responsible for any untoward incident that may occur. if the demand was not met.
