Chümoukedima Town Council reaffirms public space rules, warns encroachers

Chümoukedima Town Council (CTC) has reiterated its August 30, 2017 notification regarding encroachment of public spaces such as footpaths/sidewalks, and areas reserved for public facilities under CTC.


ADC and executive officer of CTC Dr. Kuzonyi Wideo has reminded the public of the demarcated/ notified areas reserved for public road including drainages, footpaths, electric posts, water pipelines, OFC cables etc. as resolved by Chümoukedima village council dating back to 1969, 1974, 1995 and CTC notification of 2006 and 2011.

The following demarcation rules for various roads under CTC jurisdiction includes areas besides National Highway (NH), to maintain 45 feet from the middle of the road on both sides (i.e. 90 feet).


Main town roads to maintain 20 feet from the middle on both sides (i.e. 40 feet): NH-Seiuruzha colony- Chümoukedima village and national highway- North Town school- towards Khuova river.

Approach roads under CTC to maintain 15 feet from the middle of the road on both sides (i.e 30 feet): NH-North Town school- Agape School-NH; NH-Sabalie colony– Chümoukedima village and NH-police school road-Ward 5-Ward 9 and Old EAC office-Agape School.


Approach roads under CTC to maintain 10 feet from the middle of the road on both sides (i.e. 20 feet): NH-Old Post office; NH-Ward 3 and NH-Ward 4.


It further said that all ward/colony single lanes are to maintain 6 feet from the middle on both sides (i.e. 12 feet). Other unnamed colony roads are required to have a total breadth of at least 20 feet (i.e. 10 feet from the middle of the road on each side).

The notification stated that space for common public infrastructure as mentioned above were originally reserved by Chümoukedima village authority when the present town was a village and subsequently by CTC with a vision to ensure better quality of life for all.


In this regard, CTC has appealed to all residents to maintain and abide with the demarcation as mentioned. It warned that defaulters/encroachers on these designated areas for public utilities shall be doing so at the risk of losing their property to forceful eviction or demolition as per the law.
