A five incubators sponsored by NABARD Dimapur were handed over to farmers from five villages at the poultry incubator distribution programme organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Zunheboto and Nagaland University (NU) on November 27 at the KVK conference hall, Lumami. The initiative aimed to promote sustainable livelihoods through backyard poultry farming.
In a press release KVK, Zunheboto, NU Principal Scientist & Head Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia informed that chief guest of the programme, Registrar, Nagaland University Dr. Abemo, urged participants to work hard to make the program more meaningful. He also encouraged them to use the incubator to produce quality chicks in their farms.
He emphasized the need to spread the technology to neighboring villages and praised KVK’s efforts in promoting sustainable poultry farming in the 5 villages. He also thanked DDM NABARD for traveling from Kohima to visit the farmers’ fields and attend the poultry incubator distribution program.
He urged NABARD Dimapur to organize more programs in the future, in collaboration with KVK Zunheboto, to improve the farmers’ socio-economic conditions.
Principal Scientist & Head, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, presented a brief report on the program. He noted that 60 farmers from five villages had been provided with 100 birds each, along with a month’s supply of feed, feeders, and drinkers.
He informed that under the project each village would receive an egg incubator with a 230-egg capacity, which would support the project’s sustainability and the further multiplication of Rainbow Rooster birds.
District Development Manager, NABARD Kohima, Chitubeni Krocha, encouraged farmers to transform the poultry project into an entrepreneurship initiative for success. She urged women farmers to breed chicks for meat and egg production, improve nutritional security, and sell in the local market to generate additional income.
