Wild jumbos destroy banana farm in Wokha

In another incident of human-wildlife conflict, a herd of wild elephants entered Panka area under Wokha village on January 5 wee hours and damaged a banana farm.


According to chairman of Tourist Lodge Colony, Atheo Murry, the swift response of the villagers, prevented further damage. He said that the villagers used crackers distributed by the Forest Department to drive the wild elephants away and ensured the safety of the community.


He estimated there were about four wild elephants. The site of the incident which was around 50 feet from the main road, has raised concerns among the farmers, as they usually stay overnight in their fields during the farming season.
