RCUN backs DNSU on redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station

Railway Contractors’ Union Nagaland (RCUN) has come out in full support of the stand taken by Dimapur Naga Students Union(DNSU) through its recent press release, highlighting the importance of Dimapur Railway Station’s redevelopment.
Media Cell of RCUN described DNSU’s stance as constructive and urged citizens to back initiatives focused on advancing the state’s infrastructure and overall development.
RCUN also expressed appreciation for the growing public awareness surrounding the redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station, calling for collective support to overcome challenges in the project’s implementation. While lauding DNSU’s advocacy, RCUN also flagged significant obstacles hindering the project’s progress.
It recalled that Indian Railways established Dimapur railway station in 1903 under British rule, which went on to become a cornerstone in transforming Dimapur into a vital Northeast commercial hub.
The union emphasized that despite the historical importance and developmental potential of the station, unresolved issues continue to impede its modernization. They urged stakeholders, including government agencies, local organizations, and the general public, to unite in addressing these barriers and realizing the project’s vision for the benefit of the region.
RCUN said Dimapur Railway Station, Nagaland’s primary rail hub, ranks highest in per-capita revenue under Northeast Frontier Railways. It said this has resulted in Dimapur railway station being designated to become a future World Class Station , which promises significant economic opportunities for Nagaland’s citizens.
The Union expressed concern over rampant illegal encroachments on railway land, hindering development under the Amrit Bharat Scheme. Despite directives from Lumding Divisional Headquarters and provisions in Chapter-VIII A of the Railway Act, 1989, local authorities have failed to evict encroachers. The RCUN criticized past administrations for ignoring regulations, jeopardizing the station’s upgrade to World Class status. They warned that without immediate corrective action, Dimapur risks losing a transformative development opportunity.
RCUN has called on the Nagaland State Government and Indian Railways to address organized land grabbing in Dimapur. The Union alleged that land mafias, in collusion with corrupt officials in the land revenue department and district administration, have made the city a haven for illegal encroachments on government property.
RCUN warned such corruption endangers public projects like the Dimapur Railway Station redevelopment and demanded the arrest and prosecution of officials involved in issuing fraudulent land deeds.
The Union urged upon citizens to respect public property, including railway assets, and avoid illegal encroachments. It emphasized that such actions jeopardize the redevelopment of Dimapur Railway Station, endanger lives, and hinder progress. RCUN appealed to civic bodies, councils, and leaders to curb illegal practices for public benefit, stressing that railways are vital to economic growth. “When railways develop, the state and nation prosper,” the union asserted in its call for collective responsibility.
RCUN also blamed space constraints for relocating trains like the Nagaland Express from Dimapur to Assam. They urged Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) to increase ticket quotas for Dimapur passengers and demanded stricter action against ticketing manipulations by agencies and IRCTC.
The Union questioned VVIP indifference towards Dimapur Railway Station’s redevelopment, and opined that their air travel habits had distanced them from public concerns. RCUN in particular urged support for rail development, vital for middle-class families, students, and traders.
RCUN urged citizens to “think globally and act locally” by actively participating in state development efforts. It also emphasised on preventing illegal land grabbing and urged individuals to willingly sacrifice land for essential road and drainage expansion. RCUN highlighted that such civic contributions are crucial to placing Nagaland on the country’s developmental and growth map.
