Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) and Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, S. Supongmeren Jamir, on Wednesday distributed four community ambulances to civil society organizations under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) 2024–2025.
The beneficiaries of the ambulances included Ao Senden Mokokchung, Chakhroma Public Organisation, Eastern Nagaland People’s Union Dimapur (ENPUD), and Western Sumi Hoho. The distribution ceremony, held at NEO Motors, 5th Mile, Diphupar, was graced by deputy commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, as special guest.
Speaking at the distribution programme, Supongmeren Jamir reiterated his commitment to public service and community development. “We all are committed to serve society and uplift our people. You have entrusted me with the responsibility to represent the Nagas and our state at the national level, and I take that seriously,” he said.
The MP emphasized the need for unity among leaders and civil society in bringing meaningful change. “We always speak about change, but unless we as leaders bring about that transformation ourselves, we cannot expect others to do it. Change begins with us,” Supongmeren said.
He asserted that a dynamic approach to state development was possible when leaders work together. “If we are divided, we cannot appeal to the people to be united. Leaders must first unite and lead by example,” MP added.
Further, Supongmeren called upon the NGOs and church leaders to play a more proactive role in guiding lawmakers. “We have 60 elected MLAs and two MPs, but until we are given direction and assignments by civil society, our scope remains limited. Once guided, we can raise those issues in Parliament and work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people,” Congress MP stated.
Expressing his concern over the current political structure in the state, the MP said the democratic structure has been weakened with an opposition-less government. “It is the responsibility of NGOs to ensure our lawmakers are accountable and work for the rights and needs of their constituencies,” he underlined.
Also, speaking at the event, DC Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, lauded the MP’s initiative in utilizing MPLADS for the welfare of the people. “Many may not be familiar with the LADP or MPLADS funds, but the MP has made efforts to bring it to light and put it to use for the people’s benefit,” DC said.
Dr. Tinojongshi said that ENPUD had made ambulance procurement its first request when he assumed charge in 2023. “Today, that requirement has been fulfilled,” he added. Highlighting the diversity and unity in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland, DC called for collective efforts. “Though administratively divided, there are no boundaries among us. Let us remain united and be a model for other districts,” he stated.
DC urged the recipient organizations to use the ambulances efficiently for the benefit of the community. “Development is a gradual process, and it requires cooperation. Let us work together to fulfill our MP’s vision,” Dr. Tinojongshi asserted.
The programme concluded with a dedicatory prayer led by Phom Baptist Attoi, Diphupar, associate pastor women Joikap Phom.
WSH grateful to MP: Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) has expressed gratitude to MP Lok Sabha Supongmeren Jamir for generously donating an ambulance to the Western Sümi people.
WSH thanked MP for keeping his election promises and reaching out to the people at grassroots level and making a great impact on their healthcare system. The hoho said that his generous contribution to the society has fulfilled their long-desired dream, adding it would “certainly serve as a bridge” between the rural and the urban healthcare facilities.
WSH has appealed to the inhabitants of Western Sümi areas comprising of Dimapur, Niuland and Chumoukedima districts to avail the ambulance service during the time of medical emergency and make an appropriate use of it whenever necessary.
