The first Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) under the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) was inaugurated on January 27, 2025, at Zaklom Ward, Mon Town. The center aimed to address health concerns of the urban poor by enhancing access to health facilities and strengthening the health delivery system.
The centre will focus on preventive, promotive, and basic curative healthcare through outpatient services, outreach sessions, special camps, home visits by ANMs, and community mobilization through ASHAs.
In her keynote speech, Chief Medical Officer, Mon, Dr. Supongmenla Walling informed that the new UPHC building was under construction and the facility will operate on a rental basis for a few more days. She shared that the facility will be staffed with eight people, including a medical officer, two GNMs, three ANMs, a lab technician, and a pharmacist.
She emphasized that the facility will provide comprehensive healthcare, bringing preventive and palliative care closer to the community, and mentioned that urban ASHAs would soon be appointed in Mon town to help reach underserved areas. She therefore sought community support for the staff and health unit to ensure smooth operation.
Addressing the gathering, guest of honour, Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Ajit Kumar Verma, said the inauguration of the UPHC was a significant milestone for the district.
