Naga sovereignty, integration no longer feasible: Dr SC Jamir

Staff Reporter

Former chief and former governor Dr SC Jamir has reiterated that Naga sovereignty and integration were no longer feasible concepts, and that issues surrounding independence or sovereignty had already been addressed.

Interacting with a section of the media after book launch programme of “Walunir L. Sanen Ao” biography, authored by Tiala Imchen at the Youth Oasis Centre in Eralibill here on Saturday, the veteran leader said the signing of agreements by both parties in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a critical step, stressing that all involved should honour their commitments.

He voiced strong support for the steps taken by the central government, noting that the announcement of a new dawn for Nagaland held immense promise for the future.

Earlier, addressing the programme, Dr Jamir called for creation of a united, harmonious, prosperous, progressive, and peaceful Nagaland that could compete on the global stage.
He emphasised focusing on the present and future, rather than being overly fixated on the past.

He encouraged people to shift their focus from the past and engage in discussions centered on the present, with a forward-thinking mindset that could design a brighter future for Nagaland. He underlined that such change was only possible through a collective shift in mindset.

While there was much discussion about tribal and clan unity, he remarked that Naga unity remained an overlooked topic. Noting that Nagaland had become a land of factionalism, he said the ongoing debates about sovereignty and independence had grown increasingly abnormal due to internal weaknesses among the Naga people.

Jamir also reflected on Nagaland’s divine purpose, stating that the state was chosen by God to fulfil a greater purpose. The book was officially launched by Rev. Dr L Kari Longchar, missionary-at-large. Rev Yanglu and K Temjen Jamir editor Tir Yimyim also shared memories about L Sanen Ao.

The programme was chaired by assistant director School Education Takowati Jamir and invocation was pronounced by Aoyimti Baptist Church pastor Rev Temsu Jamir. Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Tiala Temsu and vote of thanks by Lima Imsong.

It may be mentioned that L Sanen Ao, as a civil service officer, played a crucial role on making peace amongst the headhunters in Eastern Nagaland during the formative years of Nagaland State.
