50 years of PHED Nagaland; Jacob emphasizes transparency

The 50th anniversary of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) of Nagaland was celebrated at JP Park, Naga United, Chümoukedima on Saturday under theme, “Engineering humanity with the universal solvent”.


Minister of PHED and Cooperation, Jacob Zhimomi, who graced the thanksgiving commemoration programme organized by Association of Public Health Engineering Nagaland (APHEN), expressed gratitude to Almighty God for guiding the department through five decades of service and lauded the contributions of past and present engineers in shaping its progress.


Reflecting on Nagaland’s journey since statehood, Jacob highlighted the state’s historical significance as the 16th state of India and the second in the Northeast. He acknowledged the strides made in governance, social development, and cultural unification but emphasized that economic self-reliance remains a key challenge.


“There are high expectations from the government, but our resources are limited. We must work collectively to harness our potential and propel ourselves towards greater economic stability,” Jacob said.


He commended the technical expertise and dedication of PHED engineers, mentioning that many had been recognized at the national level for their contributions. He urged the department officials to maintain transparency, accountability, and community involvement in implementing government projects.


“Development is not just the responsibility of the government; public participation is crucial. Every project must be executed with efficiency, geotagged, and certified to ensure proper monitoring and quality assurance,” he said.


Exhorting the gathering, PHED CE & HoD, Er Leyang Khiamniungan highlighted the profound connection between engineering, humanity, and service to God.
He said engineering was not merely a profession but a commitment to apply mathematics and science for the welfare of humanity.


Quoting the proverb, “Service to man is service to God,” he reflected on past debates within the department and clarified that service was a vital part of worship, encoring PHED officials to approach their duties with renewed dedication and a sense of purpose.
Er. Leyang also emphasized that the Golden Jubilee was an opportunity to retrospect and evaluate its contributions.


Highlights of the event included unveiling of anniversary frame by the special guest.
At the programme, chronology and history of PHED was shared by SE Er Yanger Pongen, insights of PHED was shared by retired chief engineer Er KG Sumi, 50th anniversary blessing prayer and short sharing was proposed by Town Baptist Church, Dimapur pastor Rev. Vilodi Sakhrie, jubilee song was presented by Imli K Imchen and special song by Vikuyole Tase.


Earlier, the programme commenced with an invocation by SDO, Er K Hukato Shohem welcome address by APHEN president Er Kedolhuto and vote of thanks by APHEN general secretary Er Wonjanbeni Odyuo.
