Kohima Science College hosts online seminar

Department of Chemistry, Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ), in collaboration with Association of Chemistry Teachers, hosted online seminar on the topic, “Empowering Women in Science: Challenges and Prospects”. The event was part of the IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB 2025) initiative and coincided with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

A press release by KSCJ stated that keynote speaker, HoD Chemistry, Nagaland University, professor Upasana Bora Sinha, shared insights from her personal journey in STEM, discussing challenges women face in achieving their full potential.

She emphasized leaky pipeline phenomenon, where women are well-represented in STEM education but face significant barriers in professional advancement due to societal expectations, limited funding awareness, and lack of role models.

She encouraged young women to take proactive steps in career planning and seek leadership roles by honing essential skills such as communication, decision-making, and adaptability.

Prof. Sinha also shed light on various funding opportunities available for women in STEM, including fellowships from Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The seminar concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where participants discussed work-life balance, gender bias, and strategies for fostering a more inclusive scientific community.
