Naga general public of Karbi Anglong, Assam, under the banner of the Karbi Anglong Naga Union (KANU), held a general public meeting at the Public Ground, Borlengri, to address ongoing land-related issues and challenges faced by the community.
Solidarity messages were delivered by Naga tribal leaders, including Joel Naga president of Rising People’s Party (RPP), and Kenilo Rengma, president of Rengma Naga Peoples Council.
The meeting adopted several resolutions, which were read out by K.T. Naga, secretary general of KANU.
Condemnation of aggression & harassment: The Naga community strongly condemned alleged aggression by Karbi groups, including forcible land claims, destruction of plantations, and damage to properties. The gathering termed these actions unjustifiable and unacceptable, vowing to protect the rights of the Naga people at any cost.
Assertion of indigenous rights: Reaffirming their legal and cultural identity, the Nagas of Karbi Anglong emphasized that they respect and uphold Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards the rights of indigenous tribal communities. The gathering rejected any attempts at subjugation and resolved to resist divisive forces or laws.
Rejection of encroachment allegations: The Naga community dismissed accusations of encroachment, stating that the lands they occupy were legally purchased and that such allegations are false, baseless, and unacceptable. The gathering asserted that documentary evidence supports their rightful land ownership.
Support for KANU leadership: The gathering reaffirmed its full support for the Karbi Anglong Naga Union (KANU), expressing confidence in its leadership to work toward a peaceful and comprehensive resolution of land disputes with the Karbi community.
The meeting concluded with a firm commitment to defend the Naga people’s rights and territorial integrity, urging authorities to address the ongoing concerns in the interest of peace and justice.
The meeting was chaired by Ralamo Lotha, vice president of KANU, while invocation was pronounced by K. Mahjih, pastor Yimkhiung Baptist Church, Borlengri.
Anilo Rengma, president of KANU, delivered the presidential address, while Mhao Odyuo, KANU spokesperson, outlined the objectives of the meeting.
